Dear NROTC Moms,

I just joined this site and before I joined, I saw some sample conversation about lists of what midshipmen had to take to Cortramid a few years ago (2010/2011).  We have a tricky situation since our family will be returning from a distant vacation the same morning that our son needs to report to Norfolk (the Navy moved the start date up by one day since we booked our flights).  Therefore, I'd like to help my son get everything completely packed for cortramid before we leave for vacation.  Does anyone have an updated list from last year's Cortramid East (2013).  I'm sure it hasn't changed much from the earlier posts, but I just wanted to make sure.  Thanks so much for your support.

Hi VUMom.  I was just wondering if VU stands for Villanova University?  My daughter is in the NROTC unit at Villanova and will also be going on Cortramid this year.

Yes it does.  Don't tell my son (yet:)  Do you have a list yet?  I don't get the impression that we do (?)  Also, do you know what the travel plans on July 9th are?  Our son thinks that there's a van that he has to make it back for (perhaps leaving from Villanova?).  Yet, my husband read on the Navy site that in cases such as ours, that he may fly directly to Norfolk.

Don't tell my daughter, either:)  I don't think she has a list yet.  I can ask her.  I also do not know the travel plans for July 9th.  I will ask her that too.  I know she has been in touch with a friend who is currently on West Coast CORTRAMID - gives her an idea of what to expect, etc.  I'm excited for them.  I was commissioned out of the NROTC program at the University of Rochester (many years ago!) and enjoyed all of my summer training sessions immensely:)

I know completely what Alaskan Mom is saying here ... let them figure it out, this is part of the growing up process, etc

However, I also know my vacation would have been was less relaxing if i were in VUMom's shoes & just left it all up to my MIDN to take care of it.  I have a LTJG & an Ensign.  Both went through ROTC.  One was fine & independent when it came to ROTC & college things pretty much from the get-go.  The other, still depended on me for several things until some time during jr or sr year.  They are both doing great now, but it's probably okay if you want to help & encourage & make suggestions -- especially in a situation like this where YOUR vacation & sanity will possibly be challenged if you "just leave it up to him."  You are still his mom, he is NOT an officer yet, it is still ok for you to help him -- especially at home!!

I also recall that due to where we live (rural) it was a challenge to get some of the things on the list -- if we hadn't had it ahead of time we wouldn't have had time to order some of the things he needed -- like the flashlight.

Please don't take offense, Alaskan Mom, i just look at this a bit differently.  Heck, even after we were married & had our carriers we still relied on our folks for some things.

Thanks so much MattsMom and RoTcMom.  'Hopefully the email comes in soon as we leave on our long vacation in a few days.  At least my son can get started looking for the special flashlight and mouthguard:)
