I am confused.  A few friends have had children go through Navy BC and they have  told me they were  able to go to PIR and then spend Saturday and Sunday with their Sailor.  But now the info I am reading online says that some leave for A- school on Friday after PIR.  Will we know this ahead of time?  I am driving to IL and if my son leaves earlier than I expect I won't book a hotel for 3 nights? Anyone???

If your SR stays in Great Lakes for A school then you will have the weekend together. If your SR has A school somewhere else then most likely he/she will fly out Saturday morning. Sometimes they fly out on Sunday, but most will leave Saturday. Hope that helps.

Thank you for that info.  I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.  His A School is in Florida.

Plan to leave late Saturday or on Sunday to have the most time with your Sailor since he will most likely fly out the day after PIT. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend. What is his rating (job/specialty) going to be? There are groups for many of the ratings with "A" School in Pensacola.

I think that the time off after graduation depends a great deal on where they are going to A school.  If they stay at Great Lakes for A School (across the street from where they were in Boot Camp), they got the week-end days off.  Had to be back at camp by some time early evening.  If they were being shipped out to Groton, CT; Mississippi; Pensacola; Virginia, etc for their A school, they had to be in about 7:30 PM Friday evening, clean the boot camp barracks to be ready for the next bunch of new Recruits, try to get a couple hours sleep, then the bus picked them up at 1 AM Saturday morning to take to the Airport (O'Hare in our case).  We met our Sailor there around 3:30 AM and stayed at the gate with all of them going to Groton, CT for sub school until the plane loaded around 7 or 7:30 AM. Hopes this helps.

Thank you very much for your reply.  He is going to FL but we were led to think that he did not leave until Sunday or even Monday. Even his recruiter made this seem to be the case....but then again maybe we just misunderstood.  I am a bit sad about this news, but it is what it is I suppose.  I will be happy with whatever time we get to spend!

Recruiters do not keep up with things at the RTC. Yes, about 3 years ago those flying to Pensacola often left on Sunday or Monday, but not any more.

My son graduated 6/6.  We got to see him from about noon to 8 on the friday he graduated.  Then he flew out 5 AM Saturday morning to Groton CT.  The only ones that get the whole weekend are those that will A school in Great lakes.  They fly out of OHare, Midway and Milwaukee.  He will know a few days before graduation.  If I had to do it over again, I'd have booked a room at the Hyatt at OHare for Friday night, we could have got more sleep and gone back to bed after he left at 5 AM.  As it was we checked out of the Navy Lodge at 1AM, met him at OHare, got to be with him til 5 AM but our flight wasn't until 7PM out of Midway. We did some site seeing but everyone was wiped from being up all night. And not much is open at 5-6 AM on a Saturday.

That is good to know.  We have been looking into hotels, and also just decided to probably fly instead of drive.  So all the replies are all helpful.  I am glad to hear from you that he should find out a couple of days ahead.  Everything I have read has said they find out when they fly out the day of graduation.  That put me into a panic.  We are coming from NY and his girlfriend is coming from Georgia.   Thank You!!

I had written him and told him to let us know as soon as possible.  I think it was a week or two before graduation in his "I'm still alive call" that he told us.  We are from Atlanta and he actually had a layover there on his way to CT.  He made it back home before did.  We stayed at the Navy Lodge.  I can recommend it highly.  I think it was $66 a night which is a great deal.  Great Lakes is 45 minutes to an hour and a half north of the Chicago depending on traffic which is why having a room at the airport Friday night would have been nice.

Great...I will do that also, ask him to let us know as soon as possible.  We were also told that he may have 15 days off before school and that if that is the case then he must fly to Florida and check in. After that he may fly to NY for those days as long as he works for the recruiting station.  I am thinking that, that does not happen often?? So I will not hold out hope there.  I have read other comments that the Navy Lodge was nice.  I will check into that.  Wow, if it wasn't for this site, I would be absolutely clueless!! I cannot say thank you enough!

The 15 days is usually between school and the first command. My first sailor son had PIR 6/13 and we stayed at the Navy Lodge. It was great and will be there again for second son's PIR. Some SRs find out flight information early others don't. We got the "I'm a Sailor" call the Tuesday before his Friday PIR and he still didn't have his flight info then. Hurry Up and wait! That's the unofficial motto haha

Thank You! Yes it seems as if everything we have been told blends together :) So all this help is great!  I believe we are also going to look into The Navy Lodge.  I am going to his Fathers this evening to discuss it with them.  Seems as if most people are happy with it. I figure I should not hold any hope about finding out ahead of time when his flight is.  But yes I guess that is exactly what I need to do...Hurry up and wait! :)
