OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello AGAIN ladies,
My husband got his orders for his first duty station yesterday. Happy to finally get this show on the road but I am slightly scared about being in a state with absolutely NO family. However, I don't operate in fear so I am ready!!! You ladies are always a great help. If you guys have ANYTHING to advise me about for this move...what to do, where to go...all that good stuff.. I AM ALL EARS!

Well it depends on where you are going. There are a bajillion (the technical term) Navy bases here (Little Creek, Dam Neck, Oceana, and Norfolk). I live out in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake (CPK) which is central to most everything, but I am sure a lot of wives would tell you guys to live in Larchmont or Ghent hoods of Norfolk.
So I'll just tell you what I have learned in a year and a half in Chesapeake:
1. Ugh the bridges and tunnels, learn them, love them. Some tunnels are tolls (I think it's just 264 between NFK and Portsmouth). But there are draw bridges as well, with set open times that back up traffic.
2, There are seven distinct cities in this area, they all have different personalities so you may have to do some driving about before you figure out what place is good for you.
3. Availability - in CPK the sidewalks roll up at 9 during the week and 6 on Sundays. Lots of places are closed on Monday. And I CANNOT find good asian food.
4. Traffic can be bad, but for the most part it's predictable. But one stupid accident can screw the rest of your drive. I follow the news traffic stations on Twitter to give me an idea how I should prepare for my trip to work.
5. Bugs. SO. MANY. BUGS. The bitey kind. Lots of ticks this year. I have no idea why.
6. As far as safe areas: Suffolk, Chesapeake and Norfolk police all use this application http://www.crimemapping.com/ and you can get a good idea of good vs bad areas to live in using it. Also a good resource would be the state's sex offenders registry for more information.

Hi! My hubs is stationed at little creek now and we are going to Great Lakes so we are the opposite! Virginia Beach is a good area to live in. Some of norfolk can be shady. If he is stationed in Norfolk it will be about a 25 minute drive in good traffic to va beach. Have any info on good neighborhoods around Great Lakes to live?

We moved from indiana, the trip wasnt so fun with 3 kids, but we made it! Norfolk isnt that great lol...some of the beaches are nice, nothing like up north thats for sure. If you move into housing near NOB (Norfolk) there are a lot of spouses looking for friends and such. Some people have ladies night, walking groups, mom meet ups etc. Some even have a block party. (in good taste of course) We currently live in Norwich Manor...if any of you ladies would like more info on housing let me know..you can email me at rcwoolet@yahoo.com
