Welcome to the group! I know this will not be a helpful answer, but sometimes they leave late Saturday and sometimes on Sunday. One of the things for certain is that nothing is for certain in the Navy. The airlines do not work with you when plans change suddenly. We planned to spend time with our sailor the day after PIR, but he was shipped out during the night. We were able to spend several hours with him at the airport to send him off, and ended up finding things to do the next day. Once A school is over and they are assigned a home base, things get so much easier to plan. Our son is in Gulfport and getting ready for 2nd deployment. You will learn to roll with the Navy schedule, but it definitely takes some getting used to!
My son graduated Feb 8, 2013 and flew out on Saturday morning. We spent Friday with him and met him at the airport on Saturday morning and stayed with him until he took off.
My son loved Port Huenema and is now stationed in Coronado, CA (San Diego). Seabee CM. What is your son's classification?
I think my son stayed in Port Hueneme for 2-3 months for A school. He loved it out there and wanted to stay out West, but was assigned to Gulfport. The Navy ships them off where they need men, so they don't get much of a choice about their assignments. It has worked out really well tho, because he found his future wife in New Orleans. They got married a few weeks ago!
