It's norcal_pops again!! LOL!!

What's the environment like off base for the sailors @ GC?! Of course, the buddy system would be a good idea, right?! How do the locals like the sailors?! What are the do's, don'ts, and places to stay away from while off base?! Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world and young sailors can be vulnerable and taken advantage of!! Sad, but true. Real talk.

Any comments, recommendations, and past experiences are greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance-

We waited on sending our son his car - he got it Thanksgiving of 2013 & finished Power School in December of 2013.  He's also older (turned 25 in June).  He did fine without it - had friends that had cars.  The only reason we had to send it when we did was because he was leaving GC & heading to Ballston Spa for prototype.  HAD to have his car to get there LOL!  They do need a car in proto because the majority of them live off base. When he got to NY he eventually traded it in for an upgrade....living the high life now! LOL

My son never had any problems in Charleston....the people there are very nice. We visited and everyone was very friendly...

There are too many variables for general advice. They certainly don't need one before prototype.

My son is 24, and has always been pretty sensible, thank God. He did fine without a car in A school. He took one of our old cars back down with him to Power School. He and his brother have been trading that car back and forth since they learned to drive. It isn't pretty but it runs fine and is really cheap to insure. He says some muddy water came up through the floor, so it is probably time to buy something better.

An important question is whether they can afford it, esp. while they are still E3. I advise my sons, military and otherwise, to budget for financing not more than 4 years preferably 3, insurance including comp., taxes and reg, fuel, and $100/month maintenance. That last bit is often forgotten, but really nice when (not if) the car needs repairs or tires.

makes sense to me!!

If the sailors wear their uniforms to Patriots point they get in free. When we went there our sailor and his room mate were a hit with a visiting Boy Scout troop. they all had to have a pic with the sailors!
My son thinks the campus stinks like swamp smell. I did not find it that offensive?

My son said the same thing about swamp smell, but when I was there it was 80F and overcast the whole time. He said for 20 days solid before I got there it was 90F+ and pouring rain every day. LOL.

BTW, the local news weatherman backed him up on that claim!

My son has been in Goose Creek for several months now.  I believe that anyone with a vehicle is instantly going to have lots of friends.  My son has his car and he's quite active with a variety of fellow nukes going to activities like paint ball, movies and often eating out.  He hasn't had anything negative to complain about his interactions there.  These activities are on the weekend because studies keep them pretty busy during the week.

My son isn't a party animal and rarely drinks so that helps.  I don't believe he spends any time at bars or nightclubs so that helps.  I've sent him a message asking if there are any areas that should be avoided.  If he responds, I'll post again.

please do, thank you!!
