Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

Any Nuke Mom's/Dad's out there from this year? ;-)
I was just wondering if any of you have son's/daughter's leaving right after boot camp to the Nuclear Power Training School in South Carolina? The only posts I find on this site are from 2013 and dating back as far as 2008. My son is going directly into the Nuke program right after his PIR on 11/14/14 and I was wondering if anyone else has the same situation? Thanks!!

Hi Chris,
Unfortunately we do not know as of now when they fly out to SC. I have been praying that my SR will leave Sunday morning but it could be possible they leave Saturday sometime. I believe we will hear something either late this week or early next week on their ship off times. You will have Friday afternoon and evening with your SR I believe until 10:00 pm. I know they have to stay on base Friday night. Lets keep our fingers crossed they leave Sunday.
What ship and division is your SR in? We live in Temecula, how about you?

Hi Chris,
No, my SR actually graduates/PIR next week. He has been in since Sept. 19th. I am on hold right now trying to book an earlier flight for that Thursday. His girlfriend made plans to get out of classes early now so we want to get there earlier and maybe make the Sarge's meet and greet on Thursday night. It will be expensive but worth it to change our later flight. When is your son's PIR? Have you heard from him recently? We didn't get a call this weekend. This was the 1st weekend we didn't hear from him. It was tough......His girlfriend did get a letter so that helped but this has been tough! ;-( I have been kind of an emotional mess for the past 6 weeks.

Sorry I didn't see this. So how is your son doing in GC? I adopted my son and another for Thanksgiving. Was wonderful! Going back for his graduation on 12/12 and I think he'll head out very early that next morning to GC. (From what I have seen on this site) Is that what your son did? Bus to OHare and sit around for flight? How long did you wait? I'm trying to figure out if I should keep Friday night at the hotel even though I'll likely be at OHare by midnight. I'll be going to my aunt's home in Crystal Lake after that, so no need to go back north to Great Lakes. Just wondering if you have any advice...What time was your son supposed to be back on base after having him graduation day?

My son is doing great so far. He just started his classes today and of course he says it was easy.......just wait Sailor!! ;-) hehe! He does like the area and at this point has his room to himself. His roommate was married so he eventually got housing for married couples. We got to see him for Thanksgiving so right now he is doing great.
Yes, my son had to be at O Hare at 1:30 am Saturday morning and we arrived just after their buses did and stayed with him until they left at 7:55 am. We kept our hotel and slept from about 9:00 pm to 12:30 am. It was a long day but worth it. He had to be back on base at 8:00pm on PIR day. I think it was an hour earlier then the other Sailors flying out later on Saturday. I am not sure your son will have the same schedule but that is how it worked for us. We did cancel our hotel in Great Lakes for Saturday night and stayed in Chicago for Saturday night. We planned our flight home for Sunday not knowing his schedule until we arrived at PIR. I just couldn't imagine flying home on Saturday if he was to fly out Sunday so that is how it worked for us. It was pretty emotional saying goodbye at the airport but we were lucky enough to have him fly home for Thanksgiving. When your Sailor gets to Goose Creek, there is a really nice Nuke Mom facebook page that is a private page and very helpful! You can join once he gets to goose creek. Let me know when you are ready for that and I will request you.
If I can suggest getting to PIR by 6:30 or so and sitting at the railing down towards the bottom we had a clear view of our Sailor the whole PIR. From up higher in the stands you see mostly their Sailor hats. Our seats were perfect and we even got to make him smile a few times during PIR, which is a no, no but he couldn't help it. His sister was being silly. It was priceless!!

Thank you so much, Rhonda!! I really appreciate all the tips, especially where to sit. I imagine if we are too low to the ground and he is further over to one side or another we will have trouble seeinghim as well. Sounds like you got really lucky!!! Fun for your daughter! I'll still sit low and be hopeful! Thanks for the tip that you'll see only hats higher!
I did get to pick up my son and another recruit for Thanksgiving, so feeling better. But can' wait to see him in two weeks!

My son graduated August 22nd from boot camp. By August 23rd he was at G.C. He says it's very demanding.As he knew it was going to be. They go to somehing like a dorm room ,which compared to boot camp is great!! Tony has only one roomate and they share a bath.They do have study hours along with their classes.They exercise,they work.their room has to be clean and it is inspected.The really great thing is,he can call me more and he texts at times :)

And one other thing...I have mailed 4 packages so far.They always want something from home.lol. I have shipped an Xbox,a laptop.clothes,movies,games. I always put a surprise in...his favorite cookies,a gatorade...most times something that reminds him he will always have a home to come back to.I think that's very important for them to know and be reminded of.
