My son is scheduled to leave August 10, 2015.  I know this is months away.  How often does the date change or is it set in stone?

I am wondering this myself.  My son will graduate at the end of May.  I just have this feeling Navy will ask him to leave early.  I'm hoping he has a choice in the matter.  He is one is cousin's wedding and I would hate for him to miss it.  Plus, I am planning a graduation party (in May) and a separate going away party (at the end of July).  I just wondering if I should plan one party?

He has the choice to take an early ship date or not. Ask him what he wants as far as the parties.

my son is scheduled to leave August 12th.  He just swore in yesterday.  Its been an emotional few days.  I was not aware that his date could change.  ):

If a person with a contract for the same rating is unable to ship, your future Sailor MAY be asked if he wants to ship when that person was to ship. He must decide very quickly to take the offer or pass on it because others may be offered the same chance. That can give you a few days to a few months to prepare. If MEPS discovers a need to process recruits on a different day (it happens more for those who ship in December than any other month, but does happen at times if transportation issues are discovered), then your recruit's ship date could change, usually not more than a few days to a week or so. Except in the last situation, the future Sailor is given the choice of taking the earlier ship date or not.

My Sailor was offered two early ship dates, but had to turn down both--the first was before he had completed his graduation requirements and the future Sailor cannot ship before high school graduation (he had to go to summer school after graduation because he changed schools his senior year); the second offer came while he was still recovering from a motorcycle accident.

Your future Sailor's ship date could also change if there is an injury or condition that prevents him from shipping on his ship date. My Sailor had to have extra visits to MEPS ahead of his ship date due to a motorcycle accident and stitches in his hand. He did ship on time since he was healed enough that he was declared FFD. Others have had their ship dates delayed due to plantar warts and even a small cut or ingrown toenail on the foot. Make sure that your future Sailors take good care of their hands and feet because they will be checked.

I left info on the MA rating on your My Page.
