Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.
**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Need Help - Commissioning - Is there a special gift that's appropriate?
There is a thread here but it is from 2010 -- I was wondering if there any updates on the appropriate gift for commissioning and the best places to find that appropriate gift. My son is commissioning in May 2015.
Any and all advice and help is greatly appreciated.

Where is your son Commissioning from and Congratulations, it's a vey exciting and emotional ceremony.
When my son Commissioned last May from Norwich University, he now Fiancé' gave him the Steel Navy Sword www.swords24.eu. There are many to choose from, she had it engraved with his name.
My husband and I rented a house in Vermont to host 15 family and friends for a week, and a BOSE speakers. Something he had been wanting.
Another idea is a Coin holder. There are many styles of these too. Over the years he will be given them, we have one of those as well.
Good luck, congrats again and keep us posted as to what you get.

Thanks for the info Stacy. Jake is commissioning at Penn State. I was not sure if the sword was just for the Academy kids. The coin holder is a great idea. I know many of our family members will be asking for ideas on what to give him. Where is your son now? Did he get married too?

You're welcome Jill. It's a hard decision for sure! So many options out there these days and thank goodness for the internet!!! :-)
My son, Cory is a Naval Officer stationed in San Diego. He's engaged to be married here in Colorado, June 2016 after his deployment.
His little brother, our youngest son is a Marine, just getting off his first deployment, he's station in SD as well. We leave soon to visit all of them all and I"m beyond excited!!!
What will he be doing for the Navy? And does he know yet where he will be?

Jake got NFO, Naval Flight Officer, so he will going to Pensacola. He is so excited. And we are very proud of him. We have four kids, he is our baby and only boy. When he initially started to talk "Navy" in high school, we were surprised, but told him to research all of his options. He ended up at Penn State in NROTC and it has been an incredible experience for him.

That's awesome Jill!! I can tell you're super proud!! Maybe someday our path's will cross if not our boys.
Congrats to you all and keep in touch! I have a lot of contacts for different things such as, if you want a Tshirt with Bling, Cookies for Graduation (deployments, homecoming, etc) or dog tags with his picture on it.

Only have a minute to comment right now, will check back when i have more time to see if you got responses.
My quick suggestion is to just ask him if there's anything he would really like. We wanted to surprise our son & maybe get him a sword. I decided to just ask him & was SO glad i did. He did not want a sword at all. We never ever would have thought of what he really did want -- an aerial picture of our home (like old aerial pictures of farmsteads), where he grew up -- i know, nothing to do with the navy lol. He was thrilled when he actually got it! His sister (a LtJG) got him a really nice watch (apparently most NFOs have really nice watches) & he was pretty thrilled about that, too.

haha, Jake's Mom, i can't take credit for that idea, HE asked for it!!
We also got both our kids flags that were flown on the USS Constitution on the day of their commissioning. They didn't receive these until later, but we put them in shadow boxes, along with the certification from the ship & one of their Gpa's sailor hats. They, too were a big hit. Unfortunately, i'm pretty sure USS Constitution is in dry dock currently, being repaired, so you can't have this done for commissionings this year. You could request a flag from somewhere else - like the Capitol Building?!?
