Hey guys! We plan on visiting my son in San Diego this Summer. I really need advice on where to stay and any discounts we can get through him (if any). I have heard that we may can stay at the Navy Lodge... is this true? Has anyone ever stayed there from the group? How do we go about getting rooms? Also, we would like to visit Sea World or Disney. Do you know of military discount tickets? He is new to the base and we have never visited him before so we are completely in the dark. Any and all help, suggestions, and advice are welcome!

Natasha- your son can book a room for you at the Lodge with his ID. He has to be present when you get there. That would be a good place to stay to be close to him.

There are military discounts for the zoo or other places of interest but that only applies to the person in the military though- not to family or friends! Sorry!

There is a lot to see and do in SD. How long do you plan on being there? There are beaches, water falls, desert. or attractions to see. You will have time to plan on things now and your son may have things he would like to see.

Hope this helps a bit!

Lori

Thanks so much! We plan on staying for about ten days. I would love to hear about the water falls and beaches that are worth seeing.

Kellie- I just assumed we didn't get a discount at the zoo but only my son did! I didn't pay any attention to what the total came to as there were 3 of us plus him! That's great they give a discount to family as well.

Natasha- I will ask my son what the names of the places he likes to go to. He is currently deployed on the Vinson. He's been in SD for 3 years now and has all sorts of fav spots they like!

Natasha ~ Others have already given you the scoop on the Navy Lodge and mentioned the zoo ... My son and his family go to Sea World for free once a year. Have your son check with the ticket office at the exchange on 32nd street (base); there are also other types of discounts. The free may be limited to residents (him), but it's worth checking out. Sea World has a great on-line site.

Additionally, most of the museums locally have discounts or free days for military and families (we have a wealth of them in and around the Balboa Park area, adjacent to the zoo). Consider a visit to the Midway!

Finally, MLB season starts soon! Look to see if you can fit in a Padres game at Petco Park! The team is very military friendly. You can pick up the train/trolley system from 32nd street (off the base gate near the commissary) and take it to within a few minutes walk of the ball park.

Enjoy your stay in lovely San Diego and have a wonderful, memory-making visit with your son.

Here's a link I had seen before for Disney discounts.  Hope it's still valid!

Thank you so much!!!

Hi, I asked my son about the navy lodge.  He said we would need him to get us back on base.  So if he was working and we left the base, we wouldn't get back on.  So we decided to book a hotel off the base.  Check with your son to see if that is true.

Since he is going to Japan, we are making it more of a vacation for him by staying at a hotel and getting him away from the base for a few nights. We are going in a few months.  We are picking up his car and stuff and driving back to IL.  It will make it easier for me to say "so long" if I have the Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Park to look forward to.

If you are a member of AAA, they have discounts on theme parks.

Thanks, that is good to know.

Thanks!

Please do not support Sea World, they have been documented to have abusive practices with the Orca whales, it is shameful, check out the documentary "Blackfish" and you'll see what I mean.

Hope you enjoy San Diego otherwise.  My son is still in the midst of preparing the Vandergrift to be decommissioned, they should be having a big ceremony the end of March.  Not sure when we'll be able to make the trip out there.

While I respect lynda's right to choose her views and to support or not support an organization, I also take a decidedly different point of view regarding Sea World and the bias (and, in some cases clear falsehoods) advocated in the movie "Blackfish." For example, some of the individuals who were portrayed as "scientists" had absolutely no credentials and were merely PETA mouthpieces.

Sea World is a valuable asset to the community and to visitors. The company invests millions of dollars in research, and never hesitates to engage in rescue and rehabilitation of injured wildlife in any of the regions where the company has operations. When animals such as sea lions, dolphins, whales, and California's endangered sea otters--and even pelicans--need care, it's not PETA who sends the right equipment and skilled practitioners to rescue, perform surgery and enable recovery. It's organizations like Sea World and the Long Beach and Monterey Bay Aquariums that do the heavy lifting.

So, yes, Sea World entertains. You will have a wonderful and memorable experience.

Natasha, I am going to visit my daughter in San Diego/ Coronado next month. We are staying at the Navy Lodfe on Coronado. They do have specific rules. I would advice you to call there and get information. There is also the Navy Gateway Lodge. It is less expensive but I don't think it is as nice as the Lodge. I will send more nfo yor way after my trip.
