Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

A school graduation and leave
My son's graduation date from A school is May 15 (class 1520-A) He told me he has 10 days of leave. Does the leave start right after graduation? My husband and I were planning to go to graduation but he just found out he has to be in California that week and won't be back in time. We live almost 8 hours away, so I don't know if I will drive by myself. The plan originally was all three of us were going to drive back home after graduation. So, I am trying to make plans to possibly fly down instead and fly back with my son. My question is how soon after graduation can he leave? What are the rules for going home? I'm hoping he will call me this afternoon so I can make plans especially if we have to make flight arrangements! Any input would be most helpful. Thanks.

My son is in the same class. He is driving home right after graduation. He said he gets 10 days off. My husband and I are driving back to Charleston with him in his car. We are spending Memorial Day with him and then driving back Tuesday. He said he can leave at 1600 on Friday 5/15 and has to report back at 0700 Tuesday (5/26) A one way flight from Charleston was over $500 but a one day car rental was only $26 including satellite radio. It's a 12 hour drive for us but we couldn't see spending that money on a flight.

Kris - thanks for the reply. I assume you are not going to the graduation. I heard that Power School graduation was a bigger deal. So, is your son driving the car rental home? My son has his car down in Charleston already. I don't know if he is driving it up after graduation. Hopefully he will call us today so we can do some planning!!!! If my husband had been able to go to the graduation, then we were going to take the train down and rent a car coming back.My son would probably leave his car on the base.

He is driving his own car home, overnight, which I'm not thrilled with but he is so excited to come home, he said he doesn't care, he just wants to get home!! He said he'll stop if he has to. Then we'll go back in his car and drive the rental back home. And no, I'm not going to the graduation. My son told us not to bother but to come for the power school graduation. I'd love to go but it's hard getting the time off from work and it is a distance. Plus, it didn't make sense because he's coming home right after. Enjoy your time with your sailor!!

Oh, that makes sense. My son texted me shortly ago and is going to call us at 9PM tonight. We will ask him what he wants to do. He will probably tell us the same thing about the graduation. It seems the sailors are all anxious to get home and the graduation is not a big deal to them as it is to us! I understand your son wants to get home as soon as he can. I know mine is looking forward to it also. Too bad they have to wait until 1600 to leave! Enjoy your time with your sailor too!

Hi Kris - Just talked to my son a few hours ago. He knows your son! In fact, when I said I talked to a mom that had a son 12 hours, he asked it he lived near Niagara Falls. Said he is a friend of his! I saw on your profile that indeed that is the town near that area. I also had a persona friend that lived there and her husband was a pastor in a church up there. Small world! I think my son is going to fly home but who knows, he loves his car and might just drive. He has another friend that lives in Fredericksburg that is only half an hour away! Regardless, look forward to spending time with our sailors no matter how they get here!!!! Prayers for them the next few weeks as they get ready to graduate and take all their exams!

Wow! That is so cool they know each other. What is your sons first name if you don't want to give your last name. Did they go to boot camp together? And prayers are important, especially now. We live about 20 minutes from Niagara Falls. We had a horrible winter but I don't think I'd want to be in Charleston in the summer!! I think my son is going to hate the heat. We have nice summers but it doesn't get as hot as what he will be dealing with!!!

Your son has to put in a "CHIT" for permission to leave that includes all your travel plans. Once he gets approval, then you can get airline tickets. They can leave after graduation, and are told what day they have to be back. Depending on where you live and the weather it is good to give yourself an extra day cushion in case you need it. Your son could book the airline tickets for you cheaper with his military discount most of the time. After graduation leave they have T-track I believe where they have guard duty for the other classes that grad and have leave. This is while they are waiting for power school to start. Several A school graduates make up power school.

Thanks for replying CB's Mom. We talked our son last night. He knows he has to put in a chit. He told us we didn't have to be there for A school graduation and that Power School was the bigger deal. He didn't seem to mind much. I guess a lot of families don't get to go to all the graduations. We were there for his boot camp graduation though! At this point, he just wants to be able to get home as quickly as possible and start his leave!!!! His Dad and I were going to take the train down and we were all going to drive back with him. But, his Dad has a business trip and ironically it is with the Navy in California (he is civilian). So, I think he is thinking about flying instead. He could still drive but it is an 8 hour drive and I don't know if he wants to do that. He said that he couldn't leave right after graduation but had to wait until later in the afternoon.
I couldn't find any military discounts when I looked online but I told him in an email today that there has to be someplace or a website where they can make airline reservations. I'm sure there several of his friends that are in the same situation that he can talk to about it.
And yes, he does start T-track when he gets back which he said is a lot of guard duty. HIs class is suppose to start Power School in July!
