I got the phone call at 10:50pm, and it lasted about a minute.  It was so good to hear his voice!!!  He sounded tired, which I'm sure he was!  I watched a youtube video on navy boot camp and it has eased my mind somewhat, and I learned what all goes on when they arrive.  When they got to the haircut part, it brought tears to my eyes...I hadn't thought of that, and it hit me that he already looks different from the last time I saw him.  Now I'm just waiting on the box and form letter to arrive.  I didn't think to send him with a phone card...will he be able to get one there?  Do they get to make another phone call at anytime, or just the 'I'm a sailor' call after Battlestations?

Yes they can get a phone card there. You will get more phone calls if they earn them. My son got there May 27 and I have had 2 phone calls since the I'm here call.

Lucky!  I hope I get more as well!

FYI - New Recruits get a $150 NEX card in their ditty bag to cover toiletries/necessities. They can use it to buy calling cards and stamps, too. The $150 is later pulled out of their pay.

Thank you, CryptoDad.  I did send him with a book of stamps; I just didn't think about a phone card.  I'm glad that he will hopefully be able to call home again.

thank you, Navymom9828, for the info on the phone calls.  My son is 20, and he has never been away from home.

Because he wanted to serve our country...that's what he told the recruiter.  And also because of the training he will receive.  And he told his best friend that he didn't want to just get a job and make minimum wage...he wanted a future.  He's excited about seeing the world (he's only seen Alabama and Illinois).  He wasn't thrilled about college.  He graduated HS in 2014, and he started pursuing this in January.  He did NROTC for three years in high school, so his plan kind of always was military.  When he graduated, I think he got scared about the finality of it and that's why he didn't start talking about it with us until January.

Why did your son decide on the navy?

I like your sons' story!  And you are right, everyone has a different reason.  Submarine sounds very interesting indeed!  My sons' rating is Master At Arms.  He's always been interested in law enforcement, so that is what he chose.  Makes me a little nervous, though!  I still see my baby boy.  He will be going to 'A' school in San Antonio when he is finished with RTC.  My son is not a big guy...5'7 and 143 pounds.  Kind of hard for me to picture him as law enforcement!

Haha, that is funny!  He's just such a tender-hearted young man...always has been.  Quiet, considerate...not to mention his size!  Oh I have faith in him, and I think he's going to find out things about himself he never knew he possessed...but man it's just hard for me to picture the whole package.  LOL!  (Please note that I am not laughing at him.  I don't want you to get the wrong impression of my humor at the situation.)  Even his sisters were going, "Really???"

My son is doing subs too. Ugh

My son is 19. He is also an ET. He couldn't really decide what to do in college and didn't want to end up in debt. He likes to travel and wants to see things. This seemed to fit. He also checked out the Air Force, but the Navy had more opportunities for careers. Not sure why he chose subs, other than he liked the idea of a closer knit group of guys working together instead of the huge ships on the surface.  He wants to be on attack subs. God help me!!!

Hi lawlady1963,

My son left yesterday (6/17/15).  I'm glad to meet another mom in the same time frame.  I've been haunting Youtube for the last couple of days (LOL) trying to find everything I can on what he is going through.  I think they are still in the "not allowed to sleep phase" right now.

Hello, Karen93!  Yes, Youtube has been my best friend lately!  I just want some idea of what his days are like, so I don't feel he's quite so far away, ya know?  Have you gotten your phone call yet, telling you he's there?  My son sounded so tired!  But I was proud of myself...I didn't go all 'mommy' on him lol!
