N4Ms has a Carl Vinson group that was very active while they were deployed. Right now, since the CVN70 just got back from deployment, it has been rather silent. They have tons of good info there.

The Friends and Family cruise is occurring in July. That's a 1-day excursion. They don't have those very often so make sure your sailor knows that you are interested. My son didn't even consider that I might want to go until I asked him about it.

I think we can feel lucky our sailors are on the CVN70. Great captain. Hope he sticks around a while. Best of luck to your sailor!

If you can send me your email in PM I have a friend on another group who's son just got back from deployment on this ship. I will give her your email so she can answer your questions.

My son will also be joining the Carl Vinson, but not until Aug.  I have heard that they will be under a maintenance schedule from Aug.-Feb.  Can anybody tell me what that means, will the reactors be offline during that time?  Will my son be able to get any qualifications then?  Thanks for any help you can offer.

It means that the ship is entering a planned maintenance period, with a large work package to be performed by the shipyard, with the support of the Ship's Force (that's your son) in setting plant conditions for work and testing. He'll be supporting this to some extent, but since he's just reporting as the period starts, he'll spend most of his time in the training division of the ship, learning the basics of the carrier plant.  There are always qualifications to work on in the fleet - he'll have plenty to do, and the atmosphere is quite different from prototype.  Reactors are shutdown for almost all maintenance; the reactor plant is only "operated" when it's needed for ship's propulsion, since the ship has electrical power from shore whenever it's in port.

Thanks for the info
