Hello My Son is on the USS GW and wanted to reach out to others who may have family aboard as well

Welcome MzNet! I also have a son on the GW. He really likes it and Japan too. This group is kinda quiet right now but it gets rather active when the ship is out on deployment. Got questions, please ask!
djk's Mom - I just sent you a friend request. Due to OPSEC I don't want to make any comments
Hello Mom's :-) This is my son's 1st deployment as he is new. So far he likes Japan and he just got to his ship this past week. He said it is not clean and that he probably has every disease known to man lol. What are we allowed to send them in care packages???
They love care packages! If he has any favorites (gum, cookies, candy) send them! I send jerky, granola bars, pop tarts, breakfast bars, etc. My son always ask for anything microwavable but he works in a shop where there is a microwave. I like to throw in magazines too. I send him his dad's hunting/fishing magazines he really enjoys them. Throw in a deck of cards every now and then or if your son likes crosswords puzzles send them. You'll be surprised what you can think of to send! And always send extras because they share and those sailors who don't get mail really appreciate it.
I still do not have an address to send my son care packages!! He is on a barge
is your son on the ship yet?? Mine is on a Barge still
It is my Son's first deployment also.. BUT he has not been on the ship yet!
Also depending on the department they are in they can get very hot and sweaty. I'm not sure exactly how laundry is handled when they are out on patrol, but my son said you can never have enough socks and underwear. Dvd's are also nice but due to limited space I don't send them in the original case, but rather one of those cheap paper dvd envelopes. Instead I sent one of those cd cases that holds a bunch but doesn't take up much space. All food is great because sometimes due to strange work hours they may miss a meal and its good to have something on hand.
he has not even been able to give me an address yet so I can send him a care package..
My son hasn't given me an address either. I keep emailing him and asking him. This is first time at sea on the GW.. I would love to send him a package. I look for his emails every day, but have only been getting them every few days. He says the internet connection is very finicky. lol
