Got the call I didn't want today.  My son called to tell me he is being separated (I think that's the right term?) and will be coming home in the next couple of weeks due to a medical issue.  I don't have any more information than that. He was devastated, and I could barely understand him during our very brief call..  This is all he has wanted to for years and my heart is just breaking for him.  I don't know if this is a "fix it and try again" type of deal or a "thanks for trying, choose a new career" one.  Anyone here have any experience with this that can offer any advice?

Hi EricaH,
I'm sorry to hear of your son's medical issue. My daughter was medically discharged back in 2011 (she had an ovarian cyst)but is allowed to re-enlist. They told her she had to have a waiver and be free of problems for 6 months. So it just depends. Have him make sure he gets a code on his dischard that allows him to re-enlist. You can find more info. on the Ship 5 group. I'll keep him & you in my prayers.I see he just got to Great Lakes so hopefully you'll find out the reason because he should still be in the first week of training.

My daughter is actually thinking of re-enlisting & shouldn't have a problem.

Prayers.

EricaH, I'm so sorry for you and your son. I don't have any other advice besides what navyfam already provided, but will be praying for you both. I know the hardest part is not having all the information, but hopefully soon your questions will be answered and that will give you some peace.
So sorry to hear about your son, I've been hearing about this happening often and it has me concerned about my daughter. Her recruiter assured me that once she passed the physical at MEPS then she had nothing to worry about. Do they get a more extensive physical at Basic training?

Yes, the medical exams at the RTC are more extensive than the physicals at MEPS.

EricaH, I left info on SEPS on your My Page.

So sorry to hear this...
