Hello, I wanted to caution you if you have a son or daughter in boot camp who is covered on your health insurance plan through work.  We were never able to get a firm answer on when Navy health coverage began when our son entered boot camp.

After he graduated, he was able to generate a proof of insurance document through Navy Tri-Care and his coverage actually began on the 1st day of boot camp.  Since this is a life event and those changes can be made anytime, not just through the insurance open enrollment period, I requested that he be removed from my coverage through work.  I submitted the proof of coverage and was told that by law, he could not be removed from my plan now because the request had to be made within 30 days of the new coverage (I know, it doesn't make sense because he is now covered under 2 plans until the end of the year).

I also then questioned that if I had him removed from the plan earlier and he had washed out at boot camp, he would have had no coverage.  I was informed that if that had happened, he could then be added back onto my plan.

Good luck to all of you and by the way, the graduation ceremony in Great Lakes was unbelievable!

Thank you for sharing ... Very informative..

I contacted my HR insurance person- Lord help me. She is clueless. She said I needed a copy of my SR's new insurance card. I was like she is at BootCamp and I cannot get that. So I am at a loss until PIR and I can get a copy. But with more rumors of layoffs today- it might not matter at all.

Thank you for the information. I am so looking forward to 11/25.

There is no insurance card for Tricare.  There is only their military ID.

Sorry to hear of the rumors of layoffs, that is a bummer.

You may want to check on pricing for insurance.  I mean, it didn't cost any more for us to just leave our sailors on our insurance than to take them off because we also have a younger child, so we pay for "family plan" insurance anyway.  That may not be your case, i realize, but wanted to mention it, just in case.
