Hello, I forgot about the recruits needing phone cards. Will they still be able to call home the first few times if they do not have one? This will be my son's 3rd week coming up. So we have not been able to hear from him yet. Just want to make sure that he will be able to call prior to having a phone card.
Thank you

I sent a phone card with my son. He still hasn't used it. Just got a call he made from the medical office phone soon after getting to boot camp. Would love to hear from him.

They can buy phonecards from the NEX, usually unless something is wrong they are not allowed to call in the beginning. ..no news is good news:)
They give the recruits money so he should be able yo purchase a phone card.

My son got a phone card in the initial stuff they gave him when he arrived at GL. That was sufficient until he got a chance to buy one at the NEX. I've heard a lot of people talking about which ones are the best to buy, and when to send them. Honestly, you don't hear from them much during BC (no news is definitely good news while he's there), so the ones he can buy at NEX should be fine.

The biggest thing to remember is to have your phone with you AT ALL TIMES. You never know when you might get a call. And this is not the time to disregard numbers you don't know. ANSWER ALL CALLS! Even the phones from base sometimes show up as different area codes.

You'll get through this. It's tough, but you'll be amazed at the (positive) change in your kid. This is a fantastic forum. Use it, it helps!!

Best of luck and Happy Holidays!

True I was wondering the same if they dont have a card, they cant make a call? Couldnt they buy one at the NEX?

Thank you PacNWmom! Yeah, I make sure that my phone is by my side at all times. I usually don't answer unknown numbers, but since my son is in bootcamp, that has changed :)

HE CAN GO TO N

EX AND BUY ONE

Ok, thank you.
I heard from my son today!! Ship 03 :) He had a medical question. I was at work at the time. I got so excited and eeeked:))) He said "mom stay professional" I said ok, ok and we went on with the quick call. He will be able to call again soon. Today made the 3rd week :))) It sounded like his voice got deeper too :)))) I miss him as I know that God is on his side :))))
