My son arrived at BC 2/25/2016 - Can I cancel cell phone/auto insurance?

Well he's gone.  Can't believe the date came so soon!

Is there a list of financial items I should take care of such as cancelling cell phone service, auto insurance, etc...?

Thank you all for your advice and PRAYERS!

Hi Jakesmom... I didn't cancel any of my son's stuff until he know for sure what he will be doing after BC and Aschool. I know our SR will want to have their phone after BC and insurance they will want to drive where ever they go in Aschool. I'm going to keep his stuff active until he knows for sure. Hopefully this helos!
And Navyformoms.com is seriously the best to get info and ask any questions you have! The ladies on here have helped me so much! Welcome to Navyformoms community!

I know T-Mobile allows those leaving for the military to just suspend their phone service. That way they won't have to open up a new account when they get their phone back.

I cancelled his auto insurance.  We are from Texas and he would need to purchase an auto if he wishes to drive anywhere.  It is his responsibility to acquire those things now.  I did keep him on our cell phone plan until he is established, then he can acquire his own plan.  I did cancel his health insurance as well, as the Navy will provide his care with Tricare insurance and on base facilities.  Otherwise, we will slowly wean him towards independence.

Put his cell phone on Military Hold and reactivate it on the day of PIR. Take him off of auto insurance if he is not the owner of the vehicle. If he is the owner of the vehicle, but the vehicle will not be driven, check with the insurance company on how to handle a car in storage. As far as health insurance, determine if he could easily be added back on if something were to happen and he were to be sent home; some insurance companies only allow a person to be added after a major life event outside of the open enrollment period and if that is the case with your insurance, then keep him on until PIR even though he is covered under TriCare.

Nukes are permitted to have a Personally Owned Vehicle (POV).

I put my sons auto insurance on layup and i suspended his cell with Verizon. They have a,military suspension that can be reactivated with just a phone call. As for health insurance,  he,will remain on ours.

Once he is out of boot camp, take him off your health insurance.  Tricare will become a secondary insurance if he is on yours, it gets expensive, complicated, and a painful tangle of red tape.

Our health insurance is the same cost even no matter what as we have 2 other kids. I did cancel his car insurance until we tale him his car in May. He is going to Goose Creek after BC and can have his car then. His phone is on or plan so I kept it in so his friends could still send him texts, snaps, Kiks and whatever else they send lol.
All is very good information. I decided to keep my SR health insurance until after boot camp, just to be safe. Cancelled his autu insurance since he is not the owner of car and left cell service as is. Not worth temporary suspension when I have to call to have it turned back on with in a few weeks. It don't save you much any way. We will have cell service transferred to my recruit once he gets on his feet. Thanks for the info.

so funny to see this question as i did the same thing on 2/9.

took my son off temporarily from sprint and geico until he graduates bootcamp. saved me $150 a month

i plan on reactivating his phone on the way up for his graduation.in case he can use it once settled in to his "a" school. then a call or facetime every few days wont be as bad as not hearing from him for a few weeks in boot camp.

not sure when he'll be back home in florida to pick up his car, so that will probably be reactivated months from now

he left me his bank account log ins and credit cards to make sure his monthy car payment comes out. i dont think its necessary to go to the bank ahead of them leaving or having power of attorney. and i checked with the bank about depositing his tax refund check and they knew him by name, so not going to be a problem.

my sons financial situation is very straightforward so i hope my info helps, at lest to know that someone else had the same questions

Hi jakesmom2! My son just went to BC on 2/23 so they're probably training together! We have State Farm car insurance, and they told me they would suspend his policy while he's in BC, and he won't have to pay any premiums. He'll probably be with USAA when he gets out, though it's my understanding they cannot have a car while in A school. So my guess is he'll not have to worry about car insurance for a while. As far as his car - he is the owner of it, and his dad is keeping it at his house (we are divorced).

As far as his cell phone - he got his own plan not long before he left. He's with Verizon. I'm not sure what he was told as far as suspending his service while in BC. That's on him. He's on his dad's health insurance, so I'm not sure at what point he'll take him off since I know he'll be insured through the navy. I'm sure he and his dad worked that out. My guess is they're covered the minute they arrive at BC. I know that's the day he went on their payroll.  Good luck!

My daughter arrived @bc on 2/25, what she did with her cell phone is put it on military standby. She said when she gets back everything will be reinstated. So she will not lose her number.
