Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Please note! Changes to this guide happened in October 2017. Tickets are now issued for all guests, and all guests must have a ticket to enter base. A separate parking pass is no longer needed to drive on to base for parking.

My daughter shipped out 2 1/2 weeks ago and I still get emotional when friends and family ask me about her. I am retired Air Force and have to remember that I did this to my mother. My daughter was in DEP for a year so finally seeing her go was very hard but this is what she wanted to do and I support her all the way. The Navy will take care of her, now you wait for the "BOX" and her first form letter, then the phone call. I am now waiting for her first letter, I have watched lots of different videos about what she is doing but I want to hear it from her and how she is handling it all.

My son just left yesterday as well. He is my second son to join the navy so I've known what to expect this time around. Once you know your daughter's ship/division, join those groups as well. It really helps to be friends with the moms whose kids your kid is with. If you are on Facebook join those groups as well. I found them easier to keep up with.

Hang in there! As soon as you get your letter, make Great Lake plans! Also, keep your phone handy, there are phone calls so you won't feel too disconnected. (I recorded mine after I couldn't hear him when I was at a restaurant. There is an app for that) Make a note of any questions you want answered, there are lots of ideas on pintrest for letters to boot camp. Some very cute ideas from a questionnaire to a multiple choice or true false letter.
We stayed at the Sleep Inn that was 10 minutes from base. It isn't fancy and there is a code for a cheaper rate for the Navy running around.
You will want a car to get around but...
Take the shuttle to the ceremony! DO NOT DRIVE!! Our party split and did both, my group was there around 7am and had plenty of time to check in and find where our sailor would stand. The other part waited and did not get to the seats until 8:15. Then leaving, we were back at the hotel before they got out of the parking lot! There was a little standing in the cold but way better than waiting 2 hours just to leave the parking structure! The ceremony was amazing! Be sure to record the Divisions calling out accounted for and present! It was very cool! More than anything, enjoy the sights and sounds.
Make sure you take your Sailors phone, but they let them tell you when they can take it. Ours could not take it until later. Don't worry, someone will have a phone for them to use if needed. My call was from a Texas number.
Gurnee has a great mall for purchasing items your Sailor may want (mine wanted performance briefs) plus a place to hang out and eat. We ended up going to see a movie because he wasn't ready for us to leave yet.

Thank you! Lots of info and that is great. I have received a call which I missed. No letters yet but her friends and boyfriend received one. I am hoping I get one soon. Lol

Do you need to book the shuttle in advance? And if so, how do I do that? Also, would you suggest renting a car to get from Midway Airport to the Lodge, or a taxi service? And do you know if there is public transportation, like a train or something to get from the Lodge to the City (we will have 1 day of sightseeing before the PIR).

HarleyGirl, there is info for you in Saving Money PIR Weekend. You can book a shuttle once you get to your hotel or you can book one at Sarge's Meet the night before PIR.

Hi, My husband left on the 9th as well! It was a very hard thing to see him get on that bus and know that I wont be able to see him or hear from him for 2 months...
