Susan to answer your question, liberty is only permitted for up to 4 days. after taht is has to be consider leave (vacation) and it will count against the sailors 30days of earned leave each year. if there is a vacation day while you are on leave it will still count as leave. the only way for it to not count is to check back in the day before the vacation and check back out on leave the day after. so its just easier for them to stay on leave and count that 1 day. but as for the liberty policy, you can never be on liberty for more than 4 days at a time.

My son has been in for over 2 years. I just wondered about the liberty, leave and vacation rules. You are right, nothing makes sense! He explains it to me and then says, don't ask mom!

My son says that they don't usually combine them. Since he is graduating, he is taking leave...that includes Christmas but the Holiday counts as a "leave" day and not "liberty". Chris is tentatively leaving the 17th, grad day, and it looks like he is supposed to be back Dec 31st...but he is trying to see if he can extend it to Jan 2 since it is the weekend where he doesn't have to be there anyway...but...he will have to owe 2 leave days then because he said they won't count them as liberty unless he reports in first. As for your son showing up, they might have him scheduled at a duty station. Is his first 4 days after graduation? If so, he probably has to move his belongings on that day. Something I learned so far is, if it is logical and makes more sense, it's not the Navy way. hehehe

Ruth, I have a question about Liberty. Can the days for liberty and holidays be combined? For instance, my son says he has 4 days of liberty starting today through Monday, then has to show up for muster on Tuesday, then he has 4 days holiday? Just wondering why he would have to show up for muster on Tuesday instead of combining all the days for a long holiday?

Chon's Mom, lots of stuff can be happening...remember this is the Navy and all plans are subject (no probably will) to change. There is a difference between "liberty" and "leave". Liberty are days that you are off and are not charged against you..like not using your vacation days at work. Leave are like "vacation days" and they do not co-incide them with Holidays..ie..7 leave days and 1 liberty day equals 8 days off. You might find his C-School starts sooner than expected so he wouldn't be able to have the total 10 days off...there are so many possibilities. You are the victim of the word "patience" now and all you can do is wait to find out the details. My son ended up waiting until after his C-School to get time off...and that is still tentative until the day he graduates FMTB. Hopefully you will hear from your son soon...but make sure he takes up Angie's offer, especially since it is the day after Thanksgiving...two days to pig out! Good luck.

Chon's Mom...We are heading to GL to see our Sailor over thanks giving...however he has duty on Thurs but we are going to have our feast on Friday...I am bringing all the fixens..he is welcome to join us on friday. He might be on hold if they don't have room for him at his C school.

My daughter isn't coming home for Thanksgiving either. She is driving to Philly to be with her boyfriend's family. They are going to drive home at Christmas so I'll have a week with her and the BF then. I'm working on Thanksgiving, so I can't help this year... next year my house is open!

I dont know about in the other groups but I do know that if he ends up in Washington theres been a few moms who have offered their home for Thanksgiving. I know thats not the same but its better than nothing.
When my son was supposed to get time off after he got back from Iraq he didnt find out it had been oked until monday and his plane tickets were for tuesday. Anything can still happen.

First... where is Chon??? We need to find him a place to have Thanksgiving. Where is his school? Where is he headed after A school?
