I just wanted to warn everyone to have an ear open.  My son graduated from Navy Boot Camp on May 10th, 2013.  He is currently at Great Lakes for A School (DC) and my parents his Grandparents were called last Thursday May, 23rd by someone stating that it was him (sounded congested) stating that he had 3 day's of liberty and he went with a fellow sailor to Canada to a friends wedding where they rented a car.  Since he had a cold he took some Nyquil and subsquently got into a car accident.  He was taken into custody and charged with a DUI. He told my mother not to tell his parents because they would worry but that his lawyer would be calling them for next steps.  The lawyer called 10 minutes later stating that they would need $880.00 to bail him out and that his record would be "expunged" and his Navy career would be entact.  My father, a previous Sailor was so concerned for his grandsons future in the Navy went straight to the Bank and sent the Money Order ASAP.  2 hours later they received another call stating that my son was in front of the judge and was being charged with fraud for signing an affidavit stating that his credit score was higher than 550 but in fact since he was in Canada his credit was zero and they would need another $880.00.  Off to the bank my dad goes to save his grandsons future.  I received a call about 1 hour after this from my son stating that grandma called him freaking out! I went straight to my parents house and"Skyped" my son so that they could see he was in his barracks.  We filed a police report and notified the FBI.  Unfortunately the money is gone!  My parents hearts were bigger then their brains when this was going on and I truly love them for that but I wanted to get the message out to all of you to BEWARE!  Tell all those grandparents out there not to fall for this SCAM!

First of all WOW!! That is so crazy. Now all you parents of any military personnel, if anyone calls you regarding your sailor/soldier/airman/marine etc always ask to speak immediately to their superior officer. They should know specific information. Do not panic or accept any one who cannot tell you military specific information and always double check by calling his commanding unit.

A variation of this scam is "Hi. This is so-and-so, SS and I are in London and we just had our wallets & purse stolen. We can't get to our account to transfer money because we don't have any identifications. Could you wire via Western Union money so we can get a hotel and food to eat. Thanks. Give me you cell number again, so I can text where you need to wire the money.  We wouldn't be emailing you if we weren't desperate."  A group of ladies I know all got this email from a mutual friend. Several were just about to send money - until they read MY email.
