My daughter has been in Behrain since the end of Nov. Last week when she woke up, she had a bunch of red bumps on her face.  These bumps have now turned into painful deep looking scabs. She has not scratched or picked her face.  She is now in Italy for two weeks.  She has been to the doctor there on base twice but the doctor doesn't know what it is.  Has anyone heard of this kind of thing?  Could this be an insect bite?  Sandflies?  Any information would be great.  Thank you. Extremely worried Mom

Shingles is another form of chicken pox. So if she had chicken pox then it's very possible it's shingles.

Thank you everyone for your comments.  I've been looking into shingles and I guess it could be.  She might be one of the youngest people to get them.  She's only 23 years old.  I've read that stress could bring shingles on.

The doctor should know what shingles look like.  Rashes are tough to diagnose.  Are they getting better now?  Sometimes they appear to get worse before they clear up.

Yes, Michelle they are getting better. Thanks for asking!   She said the scabs are now starting to fall off and she thinks she will have only one scar.   She's glad its just one....

You could try that Mederma ( I think that is the name) on it.  It is a lotion that is supposed to heal scars.  It is an over the counter medication.    If it is a new scar the chances of making it less noticeable are better.  Otherwise time does make it less apparent.  I am sure she looks beautiful no matter what.  Really glad she is getting better!

did they ever figure out what it was?  Shingles are very painful and generally they are blisters that break open and not deep scabs that you are describing. They are painful and stabbing.  I'm glad she's getting better but i'm not sold on shingles. besides the face is an odd place for them, normally they are on the trunk of the body.  It always worries me about getting weird things in a foreign countries… My niece has a rash all over her body that no one can diagnose after swimming with the manatees in florida… These things worry me when doctors don't know.

Hi Ruth, My daughters face is getting better.  All the scabs are now off.  But the doctor in Italy did not know what it was.  He did give her an antibiotic ointment to put on the scabs and an oral antibiotic plus pain medication.  I feel that she could have picked up a parasite in the bathing water. ( This is just what I think)  Parasites live in fresh water and enter thru the skin.  I have asked her to please get tested for parasites.  She is now back in Bahrain and I dont know if she can be tested there.  I'm hoping to hear from her soon so I can ask her about this issue.  Now that she's back in Bahrain I hope she doesn't get more sores.....
