Thanks JayDee659 for the info. Our offer was for the USA KIDS that we passed on, but maybe a new one will arise in whatever ship my daughter gets statiined. So you slept in their bunks, lol. I bet that was an experience. They must have had some of the sailors on leave in order to have room for families.

Hello,

I just joined this group. My daughter's PIR is this Friday and I can't wait. She's had some rough times in bootcamp(as she says 'I'm not an athlete,we all know that'lol)but she pushed through.I am so proud of her,and I could just hear the relief in her voice when I got the 'I'm a sailor' call. This website has helped me so much,I can't even tell you,so thank you all for your knowledge!

cuanmi,

I'll start by saying it's been awhile since I've had a sailor at bootcamp!!! Remember no news is good news.  If something goes wrong at this point in time you will get a phone call from your girl.  She may have battlestations right before PIR!!  Since she will be staying there she will have to pack out of the barracks at RTC and move her stuff across the street to the regular base for her training.  You can always stay longer if your time and money allows, there is lots to do in that area from Gurnee to Chicago!!! What I don't know is if she will have any liberty once she starts the week at Great Lakes.  Usually brand new sailors have to earn privileges while in A school like liberty, having her electronics, and wearing civilian clothes.  If you haven't joined the group for CS A School at Great Lakes do that and ask moms who have been through it or have sailors there now.  And when you do get to talk to your daughter, ask her also.  She may have some insight.  Sorry I don't have definitive answers for you!!

We were on the USS SHOUP - it is a destroyer. Our food was much better than I expected...lots of ice cream which the sailors were thrilled about:). I still say if anyone has the chance to go, please do!

Thank you NVM-Moms of Daughters 2!  I'm so exited to be part of this group.  As a mother, as I'm sure all of you are, are anxious-excited-proud to have a daughter that has joined the Navy.  My daughter is in her last few days to PIR, Aug 25. Div 263.  No news/letter this week, no "I'm a Sailor" call yet.  I am a little anxious and trying to get my head around this new phase.  I'm a little bit worried with the news this week, nervous that there is a snag in her plans, unfortable that I am unable to really plan the weekend/week.  Her rate is CS and I hear she will stay in GL at least one week...so I'm trying to make arrangements to stay the weekend.  Should I plan for longer?  Any GREAT tips anyone can give me about the next stage in her life.  :)  I need a CALM down, it's all going to be ok!  -- M

Spyker, what ship did you do your Tiger Cruise on? I wish my fitbit was the kind that recorded stair flights.

SC sunshine, you hang out with your sailor and experience what they do. Mine had a watch but I couldn't join her as she's a Nuke. Fortunately it was 10-2 so I just took my shower and went to bed. They do a lot of standing in line, almost an hour for every meal. Typical lone started in the hangar bay, went down a couple of ladders, past the brig through some hatches then you smelled the food and almost changed your mind. But you're hungry and the food really isn't bad. The veggies looked a little weird so I passed. They did a power demonstration, air show, search and rescue demo, air attack simulation, we drag raced a destroyer, and they showed off their weapons by destroying a target in the ocean. I slept beautifully in that gently swaying rack. I will never regret doing this.

My outbound flight was cancelled right before it was to leave and nothing got in on time except for one flight with 3 seats. I bought that seat and it wasn't cheap. Won't ever regret it.

I have lots of pictures but cannot share them until I get home and on the computer. Staying with my daughter and SIL for a couple days.
