OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

PACT SEAMEN
Can anyone tell me if going in as a Pact Seamen was a good experience and is it worth it if it will take you 3 yrs to get a base and be stuck on the ship 24/7 for 2 years? My son just joined at MEPS and that is all they would give him because of 2 waivers he needed to get in. He wanted logistics but don't see a future in the Navy with this job.
Please Help Fast...................thanks.

Almost every job given to applicants these days is a SG job (SG = school guarantee). Sometimes jobs without a school guarantee will be given, ie PACT jobs. PACT stands for PROFESSIONAL APPRENTICESHIP CAREER TRACK.
Basically, an applicant gets either a. Surface/Seaman (S-PACT) b. Aviation/Airman (A-PACT) c. Engineering/Fireman (E-PACT) and instead of getting a guaranteed A-school after bootcamp, they get a few week course in whatever field they chose. When they are in bootcamp, they can get a different job if they request an A-school and one is available.
When the person gets to their first duty station, they will be an undesignated airman, fireman, or seaman. They will work in that field, and will have the option to 'strike' a rating at a later time.
People think its good because the person isnt locked into one specific job and can basically see all the jobs the Navy has and try for whatever job they like. People think its bad because the person joins the Navy without a specific job.
It doesn't guarantee them a SPECIFIC school but it does guarantee that they will go to an "A" school eventually. And it doesn't have any impact on pay or advancement because E1 through E3 is automatically obtained when you complete the time requirements. So your job during this times doesn't matter. And no, he won't be able to change anything at this time.I hope this info is correct. I got it from another group

Thanks for that. I am just not sure what he should do. He is a Supervisor at UPS part time and has ability to just go to college and have them pay for it. The only benefit in the Navy would be college tuition and the pay which he gets to save....so I think he will hate it so much if they keep him on a ship to scrub toilets. He wanted to travel and see the world but he won't see anything but water. Lots to think about. Fair winds and following seas to you and yours.

ALL sailors scrub toilets, swab decks, buff floors and shine brass. The degree to which you do so is obviously affected by your rate, but I've yet to hear of a sailor that successfully dodged "field day" throughout his or her career. In fact, there are plenty of E5s and perhaps some E6s who will gladly man a buffer if that is what stands between them and liberty call.
That said, I'm of the mind that the benefits of the Navy go well beyond college tuition. However, if the sole basis for joining is because scales tipped in the Navy direction in terms of tangible benefits, its probably not the job to choose.
There's a reason the military is called "the service". If the desire to serve is not a component of that decision, you stand a chance of being VERY dissatisfied. Though its not necessarily a "cool" thing for them to say, most all of these young men and women are patriots to one degree or another.
As for traveling the world vs seeing water, I have indeed seen A LOT of water, but among MANY other things, I've also...
* Waded ashore in Tonga and been treated to a Luau by it's King
* Come too close to a bear in Alaska
* Been pelted by rocks blown by the wind in Alaska
* Watched shipmate fished out of the drink by the crew of a moored Iranian tanker
* Manned the rails during Fleet Week in San Francisco as thousands of people lined the Golden Gate and the shore line.
* Found a shipmate that we lost in Darwin Australia. He fell asleep drunk in a tree.
* Had the boogers scared out of me by a taxi driver in Sri Lanka
* Rendered honors to the Arizona
* Been hit by a sand storm with no land in sight.
* Watched a green peace protester on a paddle board capsize from the wake of our ship.
* Captured a sail boat smuggling pot and later saw it go under as we towed it too fast.
* Jacked around with the Soviets while at sea.
Clearly some people won't treasure these kinds of experiences, but having crossed that mid way point in my life, I find it valuable to know that I lived a little.

Thank you for that Amen...and Thank you for your service. My son(s) do want the military experience ( I have one in the Marines right now) for what reason I really don't know but they know it means to serve. And since there are no jobs in site and school loans will be bankrupt just like this country soon....why not use what is left and grow up a little. Sounds like you did have some fun along the way. Plus 1000, Fatso, that is it exactly. Scrubbing a few toilets was nothing compared to what I have been given by the Navy. Experiences you cannot buy. I am triply blessed, born and raised Navy, joined the Navy, and married Navy. I'm still torn because I never got to go to sea.

OMG....please tell me your experiences. It is so nice to hear from actual instead of recruiters because you don't know how much of what they tell you is true. Also when we go on yahoo and read these horror stories.......are we getting the truth or the perspective of the sailor. You never know and I know it is all what you make it. But sometimes it's not. The odds of them getting their contract changed once they leave for bootcamp is slim to none...less than .01% do. You will hear they can get a job while in bootcamp...or while at thier training for PACT. Not going to happen, just don't count on it at all! They can REQUEST a job after being at their first command for 12 months...BUT than they can have to wait up to a year before they go to the school. Also they must qualifiy for that school and there must be an opening for the school. After they request for a school, it can be disapproved, so just 'cause they want it doesn't mean they will get it.
PACT Sailors go on ships just like everyone else...they have off time also just like others...if the ship goes underway...they go with them. They could be stuck working in the Engineering spaces or working on deck, it really depends what type of PACT they are (posted above) and where they need people.
IT does NOT guarantee they will go to school eventually as was posted above...they have to request it and it has to be approved...if they don't meet the requirements not happening...if they don't want was is open but want something else...they aren't getting it.

I'm forced to wonder how the need for PACT sailors is affected by boot camp divisions full of would be SEALs.

If you get a job on your contract............can the Navy move you to another one with or without your knowing during bootcamp? Thanks.

Theoretically, yes. If they need you more in that other job, and you're qualified, they can reassign your future rate, and you would be told. They don't need your consent. It would be very unlikely. More likely is something disqualifies you for one rate and you'd be given something different.
