Hello fellow Navy moms

My son *(OPSEC) *(will be stationed in Japan). Just hoping some moms who have experienced this can help ease my anxiety and offer some tips and recommendations. I'd like to visit him in Japan at some point but found that flights are very expensive.

Thank you,

*(Edited to remove deployment details and Ship movement)

That information is on the ships Facebook page as well as many other websites. I don't see whats wrong with what I included in my discussion but...ok.

The ship deploying may have been made public, but your son being on that ship was not. Not only does that info give info on your son, but also on you and your family.  It only takes a little bit of information to get the whole picture.

Parents comment about their sons/daughters and tag their family member's on the Facebook page.

So because it's on FB that makes it OK?

I did not say that...I was simply pointing it out.

JBMom is entirely within the OPSEC guidelines on this site. If anyone chooses to set their own personal standards to a higher level, that's fine. But don't expect others to follow.

Thank you CryptoDad!!

JBMom,

Did you see that USS Wasp is in the US Virgin Islands providing assistance to victims of hurricane Irma?

OPSEC GUIDELINES

✓ DO assume the enemy is always trying to collect information.
✓ Donʼt discuss future destinations or ports of call.
✓ Donʼt discuss future operations, exercises or missions.
✓ Donʼt discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting
    exercises.
✓ Donʼt discuss security procedures, movements, or arms.
✓ Donʼt discuss readiness issues and numbers.
✓ Donʼt discuss specific training equipment.
✓ Donʼt speculate about future operations.
✓ Donʼt spread rumors about past, current or future operations or movements.
✓ Donʼt discuss deployment or homecoming dates (including Tiger or Family
    Day Cruises)
✓ Keep in mind there is NO guarantee of security for information transmittal,
even if a forum described as “military” has its membership restricted to
    military personnel and their families.

✓ Always think OPSEC when using social media, texts, phone and email.

Join the Japan moms group.  Japan is a safe and friendly country, with amazing food and a marvelous country.  The ships there tend to have a very high operational tempo, your son will be busy.

As for OPSEC, hold yourself to the highest standards.  People will bicker and quibble, but this site is a real goldmine of information puzzle pieces.  I used to be an ET with a TS clearance, so posted info makes me itchy.  I'm in the better safe than sorry category.   PERSEC is personal security, which also runs a little too fast and loose here too.  Just ask yourself, would I want to say this directly to someone who meant harm to me and mine?  If the answer is no, don't post those details.
