Soldier Drowns Trying to Save Children
May 27, 2008
Fayetteville Observer
As a paratrooper stationed at Fort Bragg, Pierre E. Allen was trained to risk his life for others.

On May 25, the 21-year-old Soldier's body was recovered by emergency personnel in Panama City Beach, Fla., after officials say he died in an attempt to save two children.

Allen went missing just after 2 p.m. the day before, according to Sgt. Tony Walker with the Bay County, Fla., Sheriff's Office. Allen was vacationing at the Gulf Coast beach town with friends for the Memorial Day weekend.

Walker said Allen and another man swam about 100 yards out from the beach trying to help the two children whose floats were dragged out to sea by strong currents.

Rescue personnel arrived and found the three others but could not locate Allen at the time.

"We saved the three but never saw Allen at all," Walker said. "He had to have gone under before we got there."

The Water Valley, Miss., native was found near where he went missing.

Allen was the only swimmer to die during a day that involved more than 100 rescues of swimmers -- mostly tourists, Walker said.

The beach was closed hours before Allen's ill-fated rescue attempt, he said, because of the strong currents.

"Unfortunately, some people ignored the warnings," Walker said.

The Bay County Sheriff's Office attended to 24 rescue calls, pulling 39 swimmers out of the water. Other departments accounted for the rest of the rescues.

Walker said strong winds and currents contributed to the dangerous conditions on what he referred to as the "worst day ever" in his 20 years as an officer for the department.

"The undertow was extreme," he said. "If you got in over your knees, you were sucked out."

What a tragedy, but what a hero he is for risking his own life to save those children. How very proud his family must be of him, for he is now one of God's chosen sailor angels. My prayers go out to his family.

May he rest in Peace. Amen.
