DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I am not a mom, but find info on this website very helpful. I am currentely in DEP and leave for Basic in a few weeks. Ive heard after PIR you may be granted some liberty time if your not a Grad and Go? Ive also heard a couple times you'll have to have a Liberty Buddy (wether this can be a family member or a fellow boot camp member im not sure?) What do you do if you dont have family or friends coming to PIR? Will i still be allowed liberty and if so how will i get around town or base without someone to drive me? and what are things that someone could spend time doing around the area if they dont have family or friends?

Grad and Go is an outdated term. You will be able to have Liberty with a Liberty Buddy--yes, that must be an adult who could be a loved one or fellow Sailor. Don't worry, there are others who will not have family or friends that you will be able to have Liberty with. Sometimes a shipmate's family will adopt a new Sailor who does not have a loved one at PIR.

See PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend.

Have Sarge's number, 847-212-0246, just in case you need it. He has a taxi service. He is a wealth of information and may have some suggestions for you. Be sure to check with MWR for discounts and ideas.

You can take the Metra or take a taxi/shuttle. Many new Sailors go to Gurney Mall. You will just have Friday unless you have ATT at GL since you have a contract for STG.

My stg contract is 4 year so i wont have att at Gl, im sent straight to San Diego instead, but thank you so much for all the info!

And I'm sure while in bootcamp, you'll make great friends whom you'll be able to either go off base with, or tag along with their family.  You'll do great!!  As a Navy mom, I'm excited for you and the beginning journey of Navy life. I was able to attend my son's PIR, and he was able to spend a few hours with us after he graduated. Then he flew out the very next morning to San Antonio TX. He's now at Camp Pendleton.

Good luck and take care!  You'll do great!
