Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Am I the only one here who's totally relaxed about sending my child to boot camp?
I've helped him study and "encouraged" him to keep up his PT so that when he goes he will be ready to take that test and make E-2 right away. I'm very comfortable with letting him go.I feel he's ready. I'd send him tomorrow if I thought he was ready for the test and was sure he could still get the same job.
Is it because we did this once already, sending him off to college last summer (2008)? I was just as relaxed then, too. A hug and a goodbye, a minute of tears as I watch him leave, and he's gone. Out of sight, out of mind, except for letters or phone calls.
Is it because I went to boot camp myself, I know what it's like, so it holds no fears for me?
Mostly I'm eager to hear about what he learns, how boot camp has changed from my experience, fun and outrageous stories, and to hear of his future adventures.
So, is there anyone else out there who feels the same way I do: pride that my son is ready to make a major step towards independent adulthood with a touch of relief that he isn't going to stay home forever?

I am definitely not sad about my daughter leaving for boot camp. Two years ago in November I watched as my older son then 21 and without direction left for Marine boot camp. He had times in boot camp where he struggled with his decision. It was a tough 13 weeks. The end result was something that can't be explained. He is more mature, directed and learned that he could achieve anything he set his sights on. The transformation was amazing. When my daughter decided to join the Navy we encouraged her. Knowing that this would also be a wonderful foundation for her future. While I missed them both on Thanksgiving, the house was just too quiet, I can honestly say that they are both being taken care of. It is hard to say good-bye for the short time they are away and we can't communicate, but it passes by quickly.. Before you know it you will be beaming from ear to ear!

I certainly am glad to read the comments in this discussion. I was starting to feel guilty for being so excited and happy about my son's upcoming boot camp. He lived on campus at Bible College when he was 16 and I was a little nervous for a few weeks then, but now that he is almost 19 he is ready to move on to the Navy. I don't have any fears or reservations about it at all. I have no military experience although my husband was a Navy officer before I met him. We did our job as parents and now it's time to sit back and see what our son does with what we taught him.

This is what we want for our son as well. He is discouraged due to the fact his recruiter has not been in contact with him. He isn't returning text messages. We know that there aren't any jobs in the Navy - this is what he was told a month ago. So should our son find another recruiter, keep trying to stay in contact with this recruiter, or look into another branch? Any suggestions from those of you that are season parents. This is our oldest son and we have no other military mentors to seek advice from.. Anybody want to share? We will be happy to listen.

Our son will be leaving for boot in August 2010. I also am relaxed with his decison. I know we will miss him terribly. We are very proud of him.
