Our son is in DEP, leaving for boot camp next summer after high school graduation BUT we are currently looking into a new checking account for him that will be Navy friendly (available to him while he is in the Navy). It has been suggested not to go with the Navy bank or credit union that is near Great Lakes base. We've looked into USAA and thought about USBank (since they are nationwide). Does anyone have any other suggestions or opinions on USAA based on experience?

Why has it been suggested not to use the Navy Credit Union? That's exactly who I'd suggest. In fact, we had recently transferred all my son's money there. Better interest rates, and more serviceman savvy.
I agree with Concerned Dad, my daughter has had an account w/ Navy Federal since bootcamp 5 yrs ago. I have an account w/ them as well & have never had any issues. Also Navy Federal reimburses fees (up to a certain amount) for out of network ATM use which is great when they are deployed.
What? Navy Federal Credit Union is not run by the Navy. It is worldwide, usually by bases. USAA is also good. We've used NFCU since the 70s. No branch by us, but we use two credit unions, NavyFed handles all our retired/VA pay, and a local one for hubby's new job. I do all our banking with them online (pay bills) and have an excellent credit card with them (8.9%). Whoever told you it was a Great Lakes only CU was mistaken.
Thanks to all of you for all your comments! This is helpful and sailorwifenmom Please do not feel you wrote too much. As I said, all the info is helpful. I will check out both the Navy Credit Union and USAA.
One more comment... this Navy for Moms is great. We, obviously, are new and I helps so much to know that we are not doing this alone!
