Our son is in DEP, leaving for boot camp next summer after high school graduation BUT we are currently looking into a new checking account for him that will be Navy friendly (available to him while he is in the Navy).  It has been suggested not to go with the Navy bank or credit union that is near Great Lakes base.  We've looked into USAA and thought about USBank (since they are nationwide).  Does anyone have any other suggestions or opinions on USAA based on experience?

Why has it been suggested not to use the Navy Credit Union? That's exactly who I'd suggest. In fact, we had recently transferred all my son's money there. Better interest rates, and more serviceman savvy.

I agree with Concerned Dad, my daughter has had an account w/ Navy Federal since bootcamp 5 yrs ago. I have an account w/ them as well & have never had any issues. Also Navy Federal reimburses fees (up to a certain amount) for out of network ATM use which is great when they are deployed.

We had issues with Navy Federal but it was years ago (like over 10 years). From what I've heard, the issues we had with them are all policies that they no longer have, so the issue is resolved. We do have an account with them but it's not our primary, mostly it's because they were the local bank where we were in Japan and I wanted a local account for when we git reimbursed for purchases we made for groups we volunteered with.

USAA is PHENOMINAL. In addition to normal bank stuff, car loans, etc, you can also get your insurance through them - my life insurance is with them (better rates than I was getting with VGLI when I got out of the Navy), al is our car insurance - when we went to Japan and sold all our cars in the States, we were able to keep our policy active - even with NO cars on it - for 5 dollars a year, when we came back to the States to visit, it covered our rental cars, and we didn't have any gaps in coverage for discount purposes that way when we moved back. We also have renters insurance and when we had the earthquake, all it took was a phone call and we got $200 in our account to cover spoiled food. They also guve members dividends above and beyond your regular interest - by being a member, you're basically a stockholder (if that makes sense).

USAA and I THINK Navy Fed both have auto purchasing programs where they will basically so the haggling fir you and get you the best price for your new car purchase - we just bought a car thus way and it was really easy.

BOTH banks were AMAZING when spring before last the government was going to shut down over the budget issues. I don't know if you know this, but the military was only going to get 1/2 a paycheck, then wasn't goon to get paid again indefinitely until they resolved it. In fact - we did only get partial pay (but we got the rest like 2 days later). BUT - nobody knew how loñg it was going to take and BOTH of those banks issued statements to their account holders that until it was straight and they got their back pay, they would "float" them the money in the amount of whatever their regular direct deposit / paydays were so that they could still pay bills, buy groceries, etc - it was NOT a loan, they would NOT charge interest and it didn't effect credit reports or anything.

These are the ONLY banks that I've ever heard of offering something like that..

Lol - sorry, I know this is long, but basically, we're still an Active Duty family and our son has now joined the Navy as well and we told him to go with either Navy Fed or USAA. He has an account with each.

What?  Navy Federal Credit Union is not run by the Navy.  It is worldwide, usually by bases.   USAA is also good.  We've used NFCU since the 70s.  No branch by us, but we use two credit unions, NavyFed handles all our retired/VA pay, and a local one for hubby's new job.  I do all our banking with them online (pay bills) and have an excellent credit card with them (8.9%).  Whoever told you it was a Great Lakes only CU was mistaken.

Thanks to all of you for all your comments!    This is helpful and sailorwifenmom   Please do not feel you wrote too much.  As I said, all the info is helpful.  I will check out both the Navy Credit Union and USAA.

One more comment... this Navy for Moms is great.  We, obviously, are new and I helps so much to know that we are not doing this alone!
