Can anyone clarify for me please? If my recruit flies out to A school on the Saturday after PIR, is the airport the ONLY place I can give him his cell phone/gift/personal items he would like to have? I have been told that when he returns to the installation after Leave time spent with us following PIR, he will not be allowed to bring any personal items back onto the installation. I was not planning to go to the airport with him -but it looks like the only opportunity to give him anything he can carry with him to A school...thanks for any info.

Yes, that is correct; most gifts cannot go back to the RTC with your Sailor. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend and Gift Ideas for PIR (there are a few items that can go back to the RTC indicated there).
Where will your Sailor have "A" School and/or what is his rating (job/specialty) going to be? There are groups for most of the "A" Schools and/or ratings.
Hi, thank you for the response. A School is in Pensacola, FL. He will be Aviation Machinist Mate.
You will want to join the Group, AD Moms, girlfriends, and families. These groups may be helpful as well: Airman Family and Friends, Sailors In Pensacola, FL For A School....Corry Station too!!, and Parents of A School Sailors in Pensacola. The Rating Information Card fr that rating can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/ad.pdf.
what gifts can they take back to base after graduation. I am not sure whst to get my daughter? Also she is graduating on July 3. Is there anything we can do with her for the fourth?
They can't take anything back to RTC with them. Maybe a watch, but nothing else. If she's staying at Great Lakes, she can take things back once she has a barracks room on the TSC side of base. If she's flying out, you have to go to the airport and give it to her there.
There's always a big celebration on base on the 4th.
As Anti M indicated there are very few things that can be taken back to to RTC.
Here are the items from Gift Ideas for PIR that can be taken back to the RTC:
Personalized study Bible or Sailor's Bible (This can be taken back to the RTC, but your Sailor may ask you to send it later depending on space.)
Religious medallion or cross to go behind his/her dog tags or on a neck chain or key chain. (They seldom wear their dog tags after PIR though.) If worn with the dog tags, it must be silver in color and must be smaller than the dog tag. If worn on a neck chain or key chain, it can be any color. (If on the dog tags, this can be taken back to the RTC.)
Watch (black or silver in color) They can have a gold watch, but most choose not to get gold. Some ratings may require a particular kind of watch. (A watch can be worn back to the RTC.)
Earrings (silver 4mm - 6mm ball, plain with shiny or brushed matte finish, screw on or with posts) (Females can wear these back to the RTC.)
Ring (This can be ordered at the NEX or from Jostens.) Some ratings cannot wear rings. Sailors can wear only one ring on each hand.
Money (This can be taken back to the RTC.)
Wallet (There are some with Navy emblems or the blue/gray digi print. This can be taken back to the RTC.)_____
What is your SR's rating (job/specialty) going to be? There are groups for most ratings and/or "A" Schools and knowing that will help you to better plan for PIR weekend and will let you know if she stays in GL or flies out.
Join the group, PIR 07/03/2013 TG 34 - 11 Divisions (247-256, and 934), to connect with others with
loved ones training with your SR. I also invite you to join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and to check out the other Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) as well as th previously mentioned Gift Ideas for PIR.
(Group names within this reply are clickable links. To join a group, click on the group name and after the group page opens, click on “+ Join...” in the upper right.)
No, he cannot take them back to the RTC, but he will appreciate them in the car or hotel.
From your Page, I see that your SR will stay in GL for "A" School for Engineman (EN). He may be able to have food items after he checks in across the street at the TSC. Some barracks allow food and others don't. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) to help you know how to plan your weekend. You will be able to enjoy extra time with your new Sailor PIR weekend and he will be able to eat the cookies then if he can't take them back to his barracks. I invite you to join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and to check out the other Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) as well.
The Rating Information Card for EN can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/en.pdf. You may also want to check out Snipe Moms and Snipe Moms(enginers) in addition the the groups you have already joined.
