From my pdf file I only see these two. I assume AM has something to do with Aviation and Maintenance or Mechanist. If the above two groups are not what you were looking for - you might have to start your own group. Lemonelelphant or I will help you start a group if you need.
I didn't find a group for just AM. I did find people with loved ones with the AM rating in the Airman Family and Friends Group. The A School for AM is in Pensacola, so you may want to join the groups, Sailors In Pensacola, FL For A School....Corry Station too!! and/or Parents of A School Sailors in Pensacola. Is your future Sailor still heading to BC in November? If so, you may want to join the Group, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in November, if you haven't already.
BQB, AM is Aviation Structural Mechanic. It is sometimes abbreviated AMS as well.
Yes, the Navy year starts in October. This article lists the 31 overmanned ratings. http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/boards/ERB/Documents/Enlisted...
Know that the classifier at MEPS will know what is going to be open, so your son probably should have a list of 5 to 10 or so ratings that he would consider, listed in order of preference. While that 90 on the ASVAB is good, it is the subtest scores that determine what ratings he is eligible for.
