Good afternoon, everyone!   It has been a while since I have posted, my apologies.  Hello, again to everyone.  I need prayers and warm thoughts for my oldest son Joshua.  He has just left to go take the ASVAB for the second time.  He is very worried, stressed, I feel for him.  As bad as I dread the thought of my only two sons leaving for the Navy, many more times that do I pray for Joshua's success today.  He has never been very good with studies.  He stresses then gets confused and cant concentrate.  He wants this so badly, more so than any other thing I have seen him go after his entire life.  Jacob has already passed and he has been so supportive to him, he is driving him to the test as a matter of fact.  Jacob packed up "brain food" for him as they were leaving,, made sure he had his folder and off they went.  The test is at 12:30 in town,, Redding, Ca.  MEPS will be next month in Portland, Ore. if all goes well.  Please pray for Joshua,, I love him dearly and the many mixed thoughts in my head right now are bringing tears to my eyes.  I guess since he has waited so long to take the test a second time that the Navy wasnt brought up much so in the back of my head I pretended it didnt exist.  But, I know it does, soon they will be gone.  I pray that the Lord gives me strength as well as I am not a strong person and I know that my spirits will drop dramatically when the "time" comes.  Thank you all so very very  much for being a part of my life, for your advice and support and prayers.  This mom is going to go sit on the couch and cry and await my boys' return from town.. I will let you all know this evening how it went.  God Bless you all,, Tina,,, Joshua and Jacob's mama

He studies at work on his lunch, at home,, all the time,, I pray he doesnt over do it
Jacob has already been to MEPS and is moving ahead. He wants to wait as long as he can for Joshua, but if it doesnt work out that way then it doesnt. Not all plans work out as wanted, but everything happens for a reason, right? Lord, Jesus, I hope so!
This is not off the subject, but my mother in law has 2 sons named Joshua and Jacob. I thought that was cute!
Very cool names,, arent they
Dear Josuha's second time.
I am a little confused. So is he taking the test and not qualifying for anything job listed in the Navy?
My son has taken the ASVAB three times.. First time was while he was in highschool.. Scores were o.k., Second time after studing all the books we could get from the library, by himself. Did increase his score by at least 7 points. The Third I contacted a local college and got a hold of a teacher and emailed her to see if I could get a student to tutor math. She sent out emails to several students that would be interested in doing this and the teacher knew who had the brains and the sense to help. I do live in the midwest, but the going rate for tutoring is 15 dollars an hours. I also got a teacher who was willing to help so we had two people helping him. Timothy would go to the library in town and sit for an hour we did this about 2-3 times a week. It was best in a formal setting instead of our house. Timothy did go to the library at the college for the student.
He did this for a month. He even got homeworkto do! So the third and last time he could take the ASVAB did increase his scores again. It opened up more job for Timothy to look at. He is interested in the Sea Bee's trades. But he did qualify for lots of clerical jobs, on the first go round. So I would encourage you son to take it again.
My son is an average student. Has trouble with math, so this is what we focused on. He also worked with his Grandfather on learning by site and first hand what some of the tools were, and about different items in the mechanical section of the books were used for. I think this also helped. So what I am trying to say is keep going.... Good luck to Joshua , by the way my son is at the stage where is is going to the MEPS to pick out his job. He has already passed his physical. He will find out in a few days if this job is available or and how long he will have to wait. for it to come up.

Hi there. Yes, Joshua has taken the ASVAB twice and both times scored in the high 20s. Poor boy, for him its like reliving all the times he took the high school exit exam and failed. Jacob, my other son has already been to MEPS. Hes still wanting to join with Joshua but if Joshua doesnt pass soon we will by making 2 trips to Chicago. Joshua has always had trouble in school. He doesnt test well, and has processing issues, but creative as all heck. That breaks my heart because he wants to be a chef and someday have his own fancy restaurant while on the other hand Jacob wants to work on jet engines,, how can two brothers be so different?
I get it. One of my sons wants a job where he gets to work with small arms and heavy equipment, the other wants to be a cryptologist. They are as different as day and night, but both love the Navy. That's the wonderful thing about the Navy, it has a job for just about every interest.

My daughter is into graphic arts and trying to figure out if there is a place in the Navy for her. She's got 5 years to go first, but she wants to follow the family tradition and join.
Our nephew wanted to join the Army. He went to the Adult Education Center here. You know the people who help adults get their GED or HS Diploma. He had a diploma, but still couldn't pass the ASVAB. The instructor there, told him that he couldn't officially be on the rolls, but get the ASVAB for Dummies or whatever book, come to class just like those seeking the GED/diploma and he would tutor him. It was all free, and the no big deal. Anyway, that is another thought. It won't hurt to ask at Adult Education.

BTW, my sons did go to MEPS together to enlist. It wasn't planned, just a fluke of military. That is the only part that has been together. They had to sign something that says they acknowledge they won't be together. One shipped March 15, and the next May 11. Same jobs, but one is on a sub and one will go to a ship. So different schools as well. I understand how you feel about both your boys joining. I am proud to say that it is well worth it, and I am proud of them for following in their baby sisters footsteps.
The boys recruiter came by for a visit the other night to answer my questions. He said that there is a possibility they could both be stationed in San Diego together, get and apt. etc. But never on the same ship together which I understand. I just wish I knew what I could do to help Joshua pass this test. He brings all his books to work with him every day to study during his lunch, I feel bad for him.
If you get a chance, please convey to the teacher at the adult center my thanks as a tax payer in California. His performing above the basic requirements as an adult education instructor made it possible for the Navy to get two more sailors. Congratulations to your sons for their persistence and dedication to becoming sailors. I firmly believe we still have a good educational system in CA despite of the setbacks.
Yes, being a California resident certainly is trying right now! I am very proud of both of my boys for making the choice to join the Navy. I support them and boast for all the world how proud of them I am. Thank you too
