Hi All !

My son told us in August '22 of his desire to join the Navy, with the ship out July '23 - this will be post college graduation. With ASVAB score and PSF, he was accepted to the EOD Training Pipeline. He will be the first in our families to serve in the military and we are so proud. Of course, nervous, anxious, excited...insert any emotion and I have probably felt it. I hear from other former service members that he should be going in as an officer once he earns his college degree. He has explained something else to me regarding the EOD , entering as enlisted and I'm not clear on what he has told me - therefore I can't reiterate it here haha. With a college degree, do they place you at a higher pay grade and then potentially move up in rank quicker? I get the "He can go in as an officer" - is this by choice, is this based on qualification, is this automatic with a 4 year college degree.

Any information is helpful but ultimately he will do what he wants - It's just me learning!

Thnak you!

dilyn1967 - I found this information online - Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Rating (navycs.com)

I am not as familiar with this rate, but I will be sure to point some other active members on this site to your discussion. Not everyone sees these general discussions as they do not come into our email feeds.

As for general BC information, I had been notified that you have joined the BC Mom and Loved Ones group and that is the best place in our Comment Wall area (be sure to scroll all the way down on the group page) to that area. It is also more likely to be noticed than our discussion area, by other members.

I cannot speak exactly for your son's rate, but I believe that officers in general should be paid more than enlisted and this is especially beneficial for someone who serves 20 years as they look at their retirement pay. I am also posting a message on your profile page.

Please join the EOD group in here and post your questions. Those gals will be your best resource for answers regarding that rating.

LeAnn

LeAnn - Thanks!!

Welcome to the Navy!! Please read my blog to give you an idea of what the first few weeks of Boot Camp may look like.. Welcome to the Navy... Everything will be ok!  The First part is some things to do before your SR leaves IF you Can, It’s NOT ESSENTIAL! Up and to the Left is a link to all the Navy Lingo! It is titled Navy Speak and you can find it here. We are here to get you through the “Great Silence” of the next 4 weeks (ish) and the 10 weeks of BC (ish). You will come to learn that No News Is GOOD News and everything is Needs of the Navy. You life will be Hurry Up and Wait and it’s ok to make plans but they are subject to change until after they have happened so it’s best to embrace the Motto: Semper Gumby!! (Always Flexible!!)

As for the question of does a college degree automatically make them an officer... No it does not.  It does make their life easier and more profitable as an officer but they can go in as an enlisted sailor.  They will usually start at a higher rank (E3) instead of at the bottom of the heap (E1) but after they are in a bit (BC, A School and first assignment and time in Rank)... there is no guarantee that they will rank up any quicker than any other sailor in the fleet.

Yes, the life of a Navy mom is filled with emotions!! There is a huge and wonderful community of moms here that are here to help you get your "sea legs" and help you deal with all these emotions.  You are not adrift alone!  We are here with you!  We may not all be in the same boat but we are in the same seas and we will not leave any mom adrift and rudderless!  Again, Welcome to the Navy life!  (I hope to see you over on the Boot camp pages)

Thank you!
