Hi, My only child (son) just left for boot camp Wednesday the 8th and I'm an emotional wreck. Someone told me about this sight and that it could bring me some comfort because there will be other mothers going through the same feelings. I can't eat I can't sleep. I miss him so much and he has only been gone 2 days. I support his decision 100%. Can anyone please tell me when I will be getting an address to mail him letters, and what are some things you have done to help you cope with your son or daughter leaving home.

Hi Proud Mom,  My son left on 11/16.  We got the "kid in a box" one week after he left.  All his clothes, shoes were packaged.  About 10 days after he left, we got the form letter.  His PIR (Pass In Review) date will be filled in and he has about 4 lines to write a very short comment.  This form letter will also include his mailing address.  We got the first real handwritten letter from him 3 weeks after he left.  We are almost on week 4 and have not received any more letters and have yet to receive our first phone call.  This is just our story.  Some moms have heard more from their sons/daughters, some less.  It will be tough, there is no doubt about it.  I do feel much better after getting his first letter.  Hang in there!  Write to him often and when you get his address, you can start sending your letters.  One good idea is that I told his friends to post on his Facebook page.  I'm screen printing and sending those to him so he gets a little bit of a connection back home.  Take Care!!!

Thank you so much for the information. The facebook page comments are a great idea!

I am there with you!  My oldest (son) also left on Wednesday.  We got the "box" today; and I feel better for some reason.  I am just trying to take this a day at a time.  I, too, am a WRECK!  I started to clean his room, but just left it for later; I can't deal with that just yet.  We will get through this and come out better mothers on the other side . . . at least that is what I keep telling myself.  Hang in there!

Proud Mom - Sending you hugs!!!  As a mother - we always worry about our children - no matter how old they are.  Know that he is safe!!!  And he is with people that are making him be the best man he can be.  This time of year is even harder with the holidays, having that empty plate at the table is gut wrenching.  My son left right before Thanksgiving... and while we didn't celebrate that holiday (work related not him being gone) I know that Christmas will be hard.  There are some absolutely awesome people on here - and wonderful information.  Move around the site and find other people in your son's division.  You will be fine - it is hard, but you will make it.  Know that he is safe - and they will take care of him - his family just got REALLY big!

they won't get any mail and you won't eirher (besides the form letter) for about 2-3 weeks. You may get the first call before you get a letter.

All of you ....hang tight together. You will be the next PIR group. I don't think ya'll will be PIR 2/11 most likely 2/18, but you never know. Now occasionally the RTC will skip a week for PIR, also sometimes the PIR groups are very small (6 or 7 divisions) or large (15-16 divisions). The average seems to be 12 or so.

BUT don't make any travel plans till you get your form letter to confirm the PIR date.

If you want to peek in the lastest PIR group, you don't have to join. There is info there that will help...give you something to read and keep your mind off of your rct. Here is the link http://www.navyformoms.com/group/pir21111

You should be able to get the temeprary addy from the recruiter

Watch for the 847 area code and the id is usually payphone

if your rct didn't take a calling card..mail on as soon as you get the addy...make sure it's activated first (saves them time)
