Hi--My name is Connie and my son just left for boot camp.  He should be arriving there sometime tonight.  My heart hurts, however, my oldest son joined 6 years ago, so I've been through a lot of these emotions before, and although I'm just as sad to have my second son leave, a lot of the unknowns that I had before aren't as unknown as they were 6 years ago.

My oldest is an MA and my middle son is going in as an MA as well.  Looking forward to chatting with other moms and crying with you, and maybe I can even offer some insight and support to those of you going through this for the first time.  Although it was 6 years ago I remember every emotion, every tear, every everything.

Thanks, Connie

NavyMomTimesTwo, MMS is Machinist Mate Submarine. Thank you for your encouraging words, Tyler is my oldest and it was really hard saying goodbye, even if it is temporary. I know that he will be going to Groton after boot camp and I look forward to that as we live in Maine and it is only approx. 5 hours away. The hardest part has been the no contact. I have never gone more than a day without at least a text message from him. I do feel like a piece of me left with him, then I feel silly for feeling that way. I know that he is safe and he is a smart young man, I know he is going to be fine but it just hurts having him so far away! I will admit that I am a little nervous about seeing him after boot camp, everyone tells me how different he is going to be. I kind of liked him a lot before he left! LOL I am very proud of him and so excited for all that lies ahead for him, I guess I just need to find a way to pass the time and try not to worry.

Please know that the hurt you are feeling is real.  I think I bonded so much with my Navy Parents the first go around because they were the only one that knew what I was going through.  I mean sure, my friends kids' left for college, but they spoke daily, drove down weekends, had them for holiday.  The military is a whole different ball game.  And it hurts.  I had to remove myself from people that took it lightly and told me things that weren't uplifting, and I surrounded myself with people that knew exactly what I was going through.  We all got the box at the same time...we cried together online.  We shared phone calls from our kids, we shared good news, we met the night before PIR.  They became my new family.  I do agree with you--I liked my boys just fine before they left for boot camp.  I don't think it changes their personality, it just makes them grow up and I the first time I saw my oldest refer to everybody as "yes, ma'am and yes sir",  I was blown away and so proud.  We are pretty informal.  So just little things like that.  But don't worry, your boy will still be your boy, just a more mature version!

I am so glad to hear that you felt that way about your friends' kids. A lot of my friends keep telling me that they know exactly how I feel, I'm sorry but they really don't! They get to talk to their kids everyday and they are planning to be home next weekend or within the next 2 weeks. I have had people tell me to "suck it up" "its not that bad".  Aside from talking to my immediate family and 1 very good friend I have found myself avoiding conversations about Tyler, I am so glad I found this group! I am not feeling so bad about feeling the way I do! It has been such a relief to read encouraging words from others who have been through this and also from new Navy moms like me! I am very excited to meet my new young man!

Mumof2boyz, since your SR has a contract for Machinist's Mate (Submarines) (MM SS), join Sub Moms and GROTON, CT. SUBSCHOOL & "A" SCHOOL MOMS and check out Naval Submarine Base New London Facebook Page. The Rating Information Card for MM SS can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/mmss.pdf. Your Sailor will most likely fly out to "A" School the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend.

NavyMomTimesTwo, Master at Arms is a rating very dear to my heart since my Sailor is an MA. Join San Antonio MA's; the discussion, Break down week by week, will let you know what happens at NTTC Lackland (San Antonio). You will also want to join MAA Moms. Other groups to check out are New MAA Mom's (it has not been very active, but is picking up lately) and Security Sailors (it is not as active and includes loved ones of Sailors from other ratings as well). The Rating Information Card for MA can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/ma.pdf. Your Sailor will most likely fly out to "A" School the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) to help you know how to plan your weekend.

My daughter also arrived at bootcamp aug 14 after bring delayed for a day. This is also my first time going thru this and my heart still feels very heavy. I'm sure it will get easier with time.

I can assure you it does get easier with time.  It will be different, but it will get easier.  That first phone call is worth its' weight in gold.  You will begin to LIVE for the weekly letters.  And being a girl, you'll probably get more detailed letters than those of us with boys.  My boys hate to write.  But the weekly letters became my lifeline.  Did you get the box yet?  I'm still smelling my son's t-shirt.  It smells just like him.  The only thing I took out was his socks and boxers.  Those definitely needed washed.  but everything else is in the box, and will stay that way until he comes home from A school in person to claim it.

Hi my name is Julie and my daughter Kayla left on 8/20/2013. I miss her so much.. she is my youngest of 2 and always been my strong child. I am so proud of her but the separation is really hard. The tears keep coming.

HM "A" School is at Fort Sam Houston, not Lackland AFB, although they are both near San Antonio, TX. Sometime between now and the end of BC, join HM (Hospital Corpsman) A School in San Antonio and check out Basic Medical Technician Corpsman Program Facebook Page. The Rating Information Card for HM can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/hm.pdf; it indicates 19 weeks, but "A" School is 14 weeks after classing up. Your Sailor will most likely fly out to "A" School the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) to help you know how to plan your weekend once you get your form letter. I invite you to join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and to start checking out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members). Arrival and What Happens at the RTC will let you know what is happening, but you will also want to check out the other Pages. You may also want to join DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in August, to connect with others with loved ones who left the same day and may have PIR together.

You are very welcome. That's nice that he will have family in the area.

Well, thank you and your husband for your service.  I guess no matter what we've been through we are not prepared for our kiddos to join the military.   I think it's more the fear of the unknowns.  Did you get the box or the form letter yet? I've gotten the box but not the letter

lol, I live in a "smallish" town and know my mail lady by name, and we chat, etc.  When my first son was in boot camp, at first she was like "you must be waiting for a letter", and then as time progressed I could count on my letters coming on a Thursday.  So when I'd be waiting out there (yes, I sure did stand out by the mailbox), she would greet me with "sorry, there's no letter today" or "yay, there's a letter for you".  She doesn't know my middle son joined, so she'll soon find out!  lol.  Our boys might be in the same ship/division.  I'm anxious to find out for sure.  I've seen people post their sons being in that division with a PIR date of 10/11 and 10/18, so I think until we get our letters we're all going to be in the dark a bit
