While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

My twin boys have to take ASVAB again!! Please advise of anything I can do!
We are all squared away now! Yeah!
I just talked to the recruiter. My sons took the ASVAB at their high school - one this year and one last year. Now the scores are being flagged because they have the same birthday and very close line scores. So the MEPS people say they have to take the test again! The recruiter and his Chief argued about this with the testers for an hour according to him. My sons have never even switched classes as a prank let alone do something as awful as cheating.
One got an 88 and the other an 89 with 70-80 line scores. They are both very smart and this is unfair. It seems that the computer is already deciding they are dishonest before they have even gone to MEPS.

It is better just to take the afternoon at the recruiters and retake the tests seperately. They will both do better now that they know even more. It is best that they keep their careers very seperate. They are not questioning if your sons cheated they are just responding to a computer generated alert. Same thing happened to a couple of different students in North
Dakota.

I understand how someone would think that would be better but why give the test at a school if it is not secure? Why should they have to take the test again when a higher score will be of no more benefit than the one they have? Their school definately knows that cheating would not be an issue with them.

then don't have them take it, and they won't get into the Navy. I would strongly discourage starting out their military careers filing complaints. The Navy doesn't apreciate it. Scores over 90 could also open other doors. Just be thankfull that the Navy wants anyone rite now, they are full. It is not a cheating charge, it is computer generated . If it was ever a question of cheating they would have stopped them entering.

I agree with you 100% and that is an issue to take up with someone. Why not try the MCPON's office (he is the head of all enlisted) If this is their only way of getting in the navy then they will have to comply. AS I said unfair and wrong, ABSOLUTELY but this is also a good lesson, WELCOME to the MILITARY. It is their rules not ours!

go ahead and start with MCPON befor they are even in the Navy? If they don't want to retest then they won't get into any miliatary. You do what meps says if you want in.
They need to get used to the fact that the Navy (or any other military) is going to have them jumping through hoops for their whole career. Fair or unfair if you want the Navy, you do what they tell you.

Which is why I spoke to the recruiter, his Chief, then the Navy Sup at MEPS. As I stated below I am retired law enforcement and fully understand chain of command.

A chance to retake the test? YES! I took it in high school when everyone had to, and I took it years later in college when I was serious about joining. You bet my scores shot up, not that they weren't great to start with, but at retest I got a 99. DO jump at the chance.
Call the MCPON? You know, they don't flag the service records outright for that, but word gets around. Do they want to be the guys who got in because their mom called the head honcho or do they just want to take the test again? This isn't a major issue unless you make it into one. Personally, I wouldn't; I'd say choose your battles and let the petty stuff slide. They shouldn't feel stupid over something which is not their fault, they should go with the flow and get it done. The MEPS people understand that, they're following regulations too. They're likely just as annoyed with the system as you are. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Now if they were enlisted and their advancement tests were messed up, okay, then they should be upset. All a matter of context and degree.

Well now I guess that they are "those guys" but from what the Chief said before I talked to the Navy Sup. the recruit command has been working on this issue all morning. They feel it is better to take the scores they have. So who knows? The initial appt weeks ago with the recruiter they were told do not take the test again for better scores.

I spoke with the Navy Supervisor at MEPS who had already spoken with the Testing Officer. We had a very nice conversation about the situation (It does not pay to be rude or demanding and besides it is disrespectful). He said he would voice my concerns to the Testing Officer and either he or the TO would call me back. The Sup called me back and said he told the TO about our conversation. The TO called Chicago and he was allowed to validate the scores they took at the high school!
So by remaining respectful but diligent we have a happy ending in a matter of an hour. I am a retired state peace officer and know government entirely too well to just take the first answer I get. But it is all in the delivery.
I am sorry that my start to the discussion was so scatter brained but I had just gotten off the phone with the recruiter. Thanks Paula for your concern.

Please see my reply to yours above. Thanks AntiM. I do not want to be that crazy parent but this situation just did not sit well with me. And I know the rest of the process is theirs to handle plus when they get in. Hey its government!
