Hi All!

I'm new here - I was wondering if someone may be able to give me a little guidance.  My son has been in the Navy since November 2015 and until now, everything has been pretty straight-forward, so I've never really needed anything.  My son is stationed on a ship and has been out to sea a couple days at a time on occasion.  However, now he's out for several weeks and shortly after that he's expecting to go on a long-term deployment.  He said he's not able to provide me much information, which I totally understand, but at the same time, I'd like to be able to know he's OK.

My two questions are:

1) How would I be able to communicate with him while he's at sea?  Do they have access to their email?  Letters?  Text?  My son says his cell phone doesn't work on the ship, so I don't know how I'd be able to keep in contact with him.

2) He informed me that he'll be out at sea for 6 weeks, but is there any way I can find out his return date?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide - it's very much appreciated.

Regards,

Rebecca

1) Email and fB work, but know that he may not be in a location where he will be able to get back to you right away. He will have an email address that is specific to his vessel, use that one. No, his cell phone won't work and depending on the length of the deployment, he may want to put it on

2) Make sure that he has given your info to the Ombudsman so that you will be informed when the vessel will be returning.

Thank you so much!  That is very helpful.  I'll try sending him an email and when I do communicate with him next, I'll make sure I get his email address for his vessel.

You are very welcome.

The last sentence of 1) should read "No, his cell phone won't work and depending on the length of the deployment, he may want to put it on military hold." I don't know what happened to the last two words.
