OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

New Navy Wife with questions! Help please!
My husband is currently at boot camp in great lakes. He is going to be going to nuclear field "A" school in Charleston directly after. We recently found out that I am able to move there immediately when he starts rather than our previous incorrect knowledge of a 6 month waiting period.
How soon after he arrives at "A" school will I be able to join him? I guess my question is how soon do we get housing?
Does the Navy provide moving arrangements for me? (As I live in Florida)
Where exactly is the "A" school and the housing communities? Are they on the Joint Base in Charleston or elsewhere?
Would love to get some answers. I can't find much online and obviously can't speak with my recruit that often. Thanks SO much for your time!!!!

When he arrives in Goose Creek, during indoc, they will ask who is married and they will help him get you moved to the base. They will also help him arrange your paid for move. Right now, you should be prepping for the move, get all your paperwork in order and in a travel folder, get your financial and legal stuff tied up in your area, make sure your vehicle can make the trip, and begin sorting your household goods, toss, donate or sell anything you will not need in the future or which would be better replaced than moved. Save money like mad, even though a paid move is reimbursed, you will have out of pocket expenses.
There is even a chance they will send him home to bring you up. Maybe. I've heard of that going both ways, yes and no.

Anti M thank you so much for all that info!! That's great to know. So there isn't a long waiting period for the house to be ready and for the move? Trying to figure out what to do as far as my job... Was wondering if I will make the move within a couple weeks or a couple months? Thanks!

Call the housing office and ask about the wait list. Your husband will be an E-3 out of boot camp, they will need to know that. Wait lists change so much so often that I have no idea about Goose Creek right now. There are good groups here with nuke wives on it who can give you their experiences... although things always change, so always have options! I'd say more a matter of weeks than months once he is in SC. Best thing to do is talk to your supervisor, see if they will be flexible because of the uncertainty of the way the Navy can operate. Most are more than willing to be helpful.

A school and the housing communities are on Naval Weapons Station Charleston. It's all called Joint Base Charleston, but the Naval Weapons Station is the base in Goose Creek. That's where he'll work and you live if you live on base.
Once he arrives in Goose Creek, he'll move into a barracks room and start a series of briefs. Usually the housing brief is on Wednesday and at this time the married Nukes are offered houses on base. I've never heard of anyone straight out of boot camp having to wait for a house on base. After that he'll be able to set up the move. Usually if you do a Navy move you'll just drive/fly out to him, but if you do a DITY move, he'll be allowed to fly home and help you out. It's a very quick process, the wives are usually moved down there within the first 3-4 weeks (including travel time) unless there's some extra circumstances (like messed up paperwork or you need to stay longer to finish school or a job).
If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them! I never lived with my Nuke in Charleston, but I've had enough friends go through the process that I've got a good idea of how things work. Welcome to the Nuke community!

Hi Emily. Hope all is well with you and your sailor. My son finished his commitment in '12. He found a job near where we live, got married and bought a house. I am a lucky momma.
Lauren, keep in touch with Emily. She is a treasure. Her knowledge of the nuke process is phenomenal. If I sing her praises more, I'll run out of words.

I'm so glad to hear that your son moved back home and is doing so well. Every mother's dream, I'm sure! Hopefully I can one day talk Aaron into moving back towards our families. More than anything I want our children to be raised around their grandparents and aunt's and uncle's and cousins like I was. He just doesn't have that same priority.
Anyways. We are doing fantastic! I'm absolutely loving married life, it's everything I dreamt it would be and then some. The ship is nearing the end of its year long dry dock period though, so I'm dreading the time when he's back at sea and just looking forward to shore duty. Hopefully I'll be able to find a full time job before I graduate in December though and that will help pass the time (and pay the bills!).So glad to hear from you!
