new submarine mom needs real advice, anyone out there?

my son just started A school and he was thinking about changing his mind about going into the submarines. he initially wasn't going to but now is considering it, and it isn't going over too well here at home. any advice?

Both our boys graduate this Friday. Cant wait to see mine all spit and polished in his uniform standing next to his dad also in uniform. VERY EXCITED.

My son leaves for BC in Nov and he is actually gonna be in a submarine also.  I was not sure at first what to think at first either, except that I liked this choice a whole lot better then his original choice of combat.  He still wants to do that, but am hoping he decides to stay with the submarine.  I got used to the idea and it is not so bad really if you think about and it is one of the top jobs in the Navy from what I hear.  I am very proud of my son for the path he has chosen and all we can do is support them.  I hope you feel better about it soon

The man is probably scared that his little sonny boy will succeed and make him look like a little ninny. If he gets too obnoxious, tell him to stay home when YOU visit your son and tour his sub. In all seriousness, your husband will probably be so proud, he'll tell everyone that it was HIS idea that your son go into the sub service and his complaining is just a way of getting him adjusted to the environment. :)

Submarines are the way to go! They are very organized, very safe, and have the highest standards of training. It is hard to be out at sea (confined and cramped quarters) but much more difficult to be in port on a sub with long shifts. I believe that the food is better, the crews more disciplined and that submarines have a higher levels of good leadership. My husband was a submariner, and we have both worked for the navy for 30 + years supporting submarines with NAVSEA. We are really encouraging our son to go subs. Ultimately the choice is theirs though and if they feel they can live in a confined atmosphere for 30 days or more.

My son is also on a submarine.  There are days he loves it and days he dosen't.  Submarine life is very difficult and not for everyone.  Work hours are very long, and they are at sea for long periods of time with frequent deployments and training missions.  There are a lot of perks to being a submariner...extra pay and faster promotions.  My son loves being in the Navy and is glad he made the decision to be a submariner but is definitely looking forward to future land duty.  I think your son has to make the decision for himself.  They really give them a taste for what submariner life is like in A school.  Not everyone can do it.  The navy has so many options and career choices.  If submarine life is not for him, I am sure he can find a job that he will like.  My best advice is to pray about, and support him in the choices he makes.
