I was just wondering if anyone has been stationed in Japan? My husband just got orders today to Okinawa and I have no idea what its like in Japan or what to expect. I would love some tips or advice from anyone who has been stationed there or has ever visited :)

When did you and your husband get married? What paygrade is he?
Have you joined the Japan moms group? There are several.
I was in Yokosuka for a long time, so I have some knowledge of the process.
Now for the details (basically why Angie was asking these questions): For you to go live in Japan, he must be an E-4 or above, and you must be on the orders as an approved command sponsored dependent. Otherwise the Japanese immigration will not give you a resident visa, and the Navy will not move you or give you housing there.
he is a E5. PS2. The orders said accompanied, shore duty and this is our first move so I am completely new at this. We have been married for 5 yrs. My husband is 7 yrs in.
Anti M hit the nail on the head why I was asking.
Yep join the Japan group so they can walk you through the process. Also if he is a PS, he should know the process.
I loved Japan, food, people, cultural...so much stuff to see!
good to know. It looks like a beautiful place. I will join the japan chat. Thanks :)
Hi Everyone!
My son will be going next year to Okinawa as well. I was wondering a few things about it myself.
I know this my sound very crazy but......will he be able to transfer his phone over there or what will be the best way for him to have contact with us?
He will need a new phone, and a Japanese contract. There are a number of free texting apps though, and some moms use magic jack... there are ways around the high cost of calls. He will need to suspend the phone he has now. Have you joined on eof the Japan moms groups? They have a good discussion on this.
I was also wondering this as well. I heard its also good to set up skype. I was hoping to keep my cell phone :/ bummer
