My son who is a Navy Dr is being sent to Okinawa, Japan In July for 2 years. He currently has Tmobile, will he need to get an international plan or whole new number that is local there? He will need a way for local work to call him and it is his understanding they wont be able to dial a US number? Any insight?
Hi Wendy - be sure to join the Japan Moms group - here's the link:
There are some very knowledgeable moms over there and they should be able to answer any questions you might have.
Wendy - Yes, I would join the Japan group - you might ask them about WhatsApp. Also, Skype. Granted I think both of these require some sort of cell service. I have some relatives who were stationed overseas and they used Skype quite a bit for communication. I have had other family use WhatsApp. The best option is to also check with his phone carrier directly to see what their international plans consist of.
You are welcome!! Hopefully you can get some response from the Japan group. You might want to go down in the comment wall area, if you haven't already and post your question there. The way this site works, if people are following a group, they may only see the messages from the comment area and not always the discussion area, so they don't think there is any activity. Some of us have our settings where we see latest activity on the left side of our screen but I know I don't always see everything that is posted in the groups.
If you don't hear anything in the group and still have questions about communication, please reach out to me. Click on my chipmunk, it will take you to my profile page and you can post a comment there. I will see if I can glean any information from my family that was overseas.
My DS, also in Japan, has just switched to GoogleFi and loves it. It just has to be set up in the USA and then shipped to him.
TY I will let him know.
