DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Hi Laurel, My 2 sons, Patrick and Matthew are the same. We were happy to receive the form letter with an address to write to and a graduation date. We will be attending along with the boys girlfriends, and have already reserved rooms at the Ramada. Can't wait to see them!

Hello Mary. 2 boys graduating! You must be so proud. I can't wait for PIR myself. I'm going to plan a meet and greet and the Ramada the night before PIR so we will definitely meet. I can't wait to see my boy. Did you join the PIR group? Some of the most experienced Moms are there.

We are so proud of them. the boys,(men), are 22 and 19 years old. We will be staying at the Ramada as a matter of fact : ) I think I joined the PIR group. Lol I am just learning how to navigate this website. I am looking forward to meeting everyone.

As difficult as waiting is, it seems to be the unofficial motto!! Hurry up and wait.
I would suggest, if you already know her ship and division number and PIR date, that you can go ahead and book flights BUT get refundable tickets. Anything can happen while they are at bootcamp and the actual PIR date could change for a number of reasons. (Illness, injury, problems with academic tests, problems passing a PFA, anything) Don't want to scare you but my sailor was to PIR last 4/9/10 and didn't do Battle Stations until 3/18/10 because of a knee injury. We had to cancel our room reservations but were planning to drive.

Hi laurelbc, got my letter, ship 11 div 181, grad date 5/27, but bootcamp website says grad 5/26??? also how to know if they are grad and go....very difficult to schedule anything around this confusion...anyone know?

Navy Mom and Chazzy's Mom, Jessica thinks the website must be wrong and we are waiting for them to correct or confirm it. Personally, I will take an extra day with my son, but I would not count on it. I think 5/27 is it but it is a little up in the air now.

I just returned from our son's PIR. What an amazing experience. Here is what I learned. Although another woman liked the Ramada, I didn't. Too many reasons to list here. Others in my party did however. I left and went to the Red Carpet Inn as it is the closest to the base. Do Not Go There! It's GROSS! The area is just not that nice so for my money I went to Gurnee, 9 miles from base, paid less money for a much nicer hotel, much nicer restaurants, ie. better food and atmosphere. Easy to get around. We did not take shuttle as it gets people there later. We drove, waited at the gate in a line of cars at 6, the gate opens at 6:30 and we walked right in and got front row seats. If you wait at all you will be searching for seats. It is packed! They have some refreshments for sale while you wait, water, coffee and danish, chips etc. We waited two hours but it was worth the front row seats! I filmed the march in but mistakenly shut off camera when we sat down. I thought it was over. Do not make that mistake. Wait. The best part is coming but I don't want to spoil it for you. And you only get 10 minutes with your recruit afterwards so if you are in front you can run right to them. If you have to make your way through a sea of people it cuts your time to nothing. I hope this helps you have a better experience.

thanks, good info. One question though, you said we only get 10 min with our recruits, do you mean the ones staying in great lakes? I thought they got to leave for the day with us then, as they are flying out fri.

You have ten minutes before you have to clear out of PIR hall....the recruits that stay in GL have to go back to the barracks and move the others are free to leave with you
