"Darkhorse" is the name given to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, the most highly decorated regiment in the Marines.  These young men are currently serving in Afghanistan.  There are five companies in this battalion and this represents a large number of Marines who would appreciate any love we can send their way.

Weapons Company received several care packages in December and then HAE moved on to Lima Company.  When all have finished up mailing their boxes, Lima Company will be put to "bed."  The next, and probably last company, we will do is Kilo Company.  There are about 170 Marines in this group, all males.  The mailing date for Kilo Company is February 7.   This should give us enough time to get sufficient pillowcases ready for mailing.  As with every project, we need to have sufficient pillowcases for each Marine in the company to receive one.

For OPSEC reasons, I would appreciate your letting me know via PM (make me a friend on N4M if I am not already one) the number of pillowcases you will send in your box.

Sue sent me this "Semper Fi" poster.  I watched the video about the Marines in Bethesda.  The attitude of the Marines who have suffered terrible injuries is absolutely amazing.  Here is a link with a video of Kilo Company.

The box to Kilo company is now in the mail. I had to mail it today because we are getting bad weather on Monday. So, its in the mail!

Received this letter in today's mail:

Dear Birdie,

My name is Cxxxx Wxxxxx and I am a Marine serving with Co K 3rd Battalion 25th Marines. My platoon recently received a care package from you. We were all able to have a scarf from you. On behalf of the Marines in my squad, I wanted to thank you for all that you have done.

We had not received mail for two months due to our location and your packages were the first that we received for Christmas. They did wonders for us after being out for so long. The scarves will go a long way in helping us get through these bitterly cold nights.

I personally went through all of the cards and pictures and want to thank everyone involved. My friends and I especially loved the pictures of the children!

Thank you for all of your support!

Cxxx Wxxxx, Sergeant

that is wonderful Birdie!  thanks for posting!
That's a great letter. I'm always so sad to hear when our guys don't get anything for Christmas. It sounds like they really loved those scarfs. I guess I'm going to have to start early for next year.
Lyn, I have one that I couldn't get finished.  I think I need to get it done and save it instead of thinking "next fall".  good idea.

Oh, Birdie, that is wonderful.  I am so glad that I sent the scarves, too.  It's great to know all received them.  The note does give me goose bumps.

I need to get busy with some pictures!!

Birdie - what a wonderful note for you to receive.  Thank you for sharing it.  It makes me sad to to think of them and wonder how many other groups are out there like them that didn't get anything at Christmas time.  So glad we adopted them.

Well, bought a serger today!  and a sewing machine.  both on sale and kept it within what I had budgeted for the sewing machine.  So I feel very very lucky.   JoAnn's had syphony fabric $1.00 off a yard, so I got some of that too!  Will be going back and getting free lessons on my serger from them.  can't wait.   So I'm back in business so to speak!

Dori, I mailed 22 plus some coffee grounds today to Kilo.

Natalie, you will love the serger.  It makes seams so nice and neat AND it does it in one pass.

Good to know about the sale on fabric at JoAnn's.  I don't think I can get to Bangor but perhaps I can order on-line.

Dori, I have a box ready for shipping on Monday to Kilo. 10 pcs and I added a dozen pairs of socks, and coffee. Let me know if you think they would prefer something other than socks and coffee. They can always use them, especially since it is so cold for them right now. I'll send you an email about the 21st mailing.

Lyn, I know how you feel when it comes to the weather. In the last 6 days, we've had 3" of snow, 2" of snow, 3" of ice, and another 4" of snow last night. I am awaiting for three packages from USPS. My mail carrier told me they were running 2-3 days behind in getting their packages, themselves because of the weather.

Birdie, what a great letter. It is so true that most people aren't aware that these units that are in the outer areas do not receive package like others located in areas that are not as remote.

Natalie, glad you were able to find a machine that had your name on it.

Well, it's 2am here, and I have yet to put a dish together to take to our Annual Super Bowl party. Just hate it when I realize I don't have all of the needed ingredients for 'fixins' and I have to go to the grocery store. Was hoping the weather was going to be 'cleared up' by today... knew I should have gone last night before the 4" of snow (that was supposed to be flurries) arrived.

Hope everyone else who has been affected by the winter precipitation has been able to dig themselves out from under the blanket of snow.

I know that we haven't finished mailing to Kilo Co or H & S Company. But, they will be leaving the Stan very soon and I was wondering if we have any contacts for their replacements? The new Marines will be there through next Thanksgiving and Christmas, etc. I was just wondering if we could find out who will be taking Lima and Kilo Co's place.
I asked my 3/5 contact and he gave me a battalion that "might" be there.  I will ask again.  I suspect the new unit will be there until late fall with another unit replacing them over Christmas.  If you are interested I will try to find out.
I think it is worth trying to find out. These Marines are having a tough time where they are and I don't think it will be any different for their replacements. My thought was if we find our just after they get there then we have months to decide what we want to do rather than weeks.
