"Darkhorse" is the name given to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, the most highly decorated regiment in the Marines.  These young men are currently serving in Afghanistan.  There are five companies in this battalion and this represents a large number of Marines who would appreciate any love we can send their way.

Weapons Company received several care packages in December and then HAE moved on to Lima Company.  When all have finished up mailing their boxes, Lima Company will be put to "bed."  The next, and probably last company, we will do is Kilo Company.  There are about 170 Marines in this group, all males.  The mailing date for Kilo Company is February 7.   This should give us enough time to get sufficient pillowcases ready for mailing.  As with every project, we need to have sufficient pillowcases for each Marine in the company to receive one.

For OPSEC reasons, I would appreciate your letting me know via PM (make me a friend on N4M if I am not already one) the number of pillowcases you will send in your box.

Sue sent me this "Semper Fi" poster.  I watched the video about the Marines in Bethesda.  The attitude of the Marines who have suffered terrible injuries is absolutely amazing.  Here is a link with a video of Kilo Company.

So nice! I too like the monkeys!

MarineParents sent me a link to an article about the fighting that the 3/5 Marines have been doing.  Here is an excerpt from the article:

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SABIT QADAM, Afghanistan, March 9, 2011 - When Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates visited this small base in Afghanistan's Helmand province yesterday, he noted that Marines have brought nearly unprecedented security to the part of Afghanistan where the Taliban wielded the most power.

The base and surrounding outposts are home to Marines of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. With 29 Marines killed and 150 wounded, the regiment has suffered more casualties than any other U.S. unit in Afghanistan, fighting to drive the Taliban from their former heartland.

Marine Parents is fundraising for their Purple Heart Support.  If anyone is curious:

In case you have not found it on any of the other posts I have posted this morning I have several (expiring soon Joanne coupons) please pm me right away if you would like any of them

The question was posed some time ago what H&S stands for. Operation Gratitude posted a picture of an H&S soldier homecoming. They said it stands for Headquarters and Support Company.

the H & S company.

India company
If there is going to be a project for this group this year let me know. I am heavy into making greeting cards and christmas stockings and would like to make some for this group if it is a need ?! :)

we are working on getting another unit as this one will be home.  will keep you posted.  and thanks for the offer!

in fact, I have a marine contact who is deploying this year to the sandbox.  I need to follow up with him.

Sue I love that fabric that is blue with the firework starbursts it looks familiar. Who makes that, do you remember? I love that extra band there too. Did you just put a piece in there between cuff and body of pillow case and then just press it down?

actually, I didn't make any of those.  I get pcs from all over southern AZ for Heads at Ease.  In Dec, after the pillowcase challenge held for HAE Thanksgiving weekend, I am sure that I had 800-1000 on hand.  My hubby picked some more up today from the quilting store.

I have personally mailed 604 so far this year and in Dec I  probably mailed 300 or so, most of which went to the Lincoln.

that is the hot dog method of pillowcases.  They are beautifully done, but take more fabric and definitley more space to pack.  But if people want to make and donate them, I take them, no worries.

Dori made up a little smaller pattern and I asked the quilting store to give that one out.  And boy, that really helps!  I can forward that to you if you  like.    Or Dori, can you post that on the pc instructions thread?

the starburst fabric came from a quilting store in Phx.

I think that is Robert Kaufmann...which by the way I am still waiting for fabric. We are next on the list she SAYS...but I am hoping it does not take forever...

So How did you organize the AZ Heads at Ease. I know you are somewhat of a celebrity tee hee and it is probably easy for you to get women together, But, perhaps we could do the same thing here in Dallas?

Maybe if you had a flyer explaining HAE and your contact information I could take it around to the different stores. They may be leary of me just going in and asking? Everyone I talk to in the sewing stores I mention Head at Ease but I need some sort of handout or card?

I just a navy mom who wanted to make a few pillowcases.  Not a celebrity.  Even though my son is a navy veteran now, I am still that same woman.

I will email you some information.  Heads at Ease is not just AZ, but country wide.  I have liasons from different parts of the country who are a tremendous help to me.
