Hello everyone,

My daughter leaves for bootcamp November 9th.  This will be the first time she won't be home for the holidays.  I was just wondering what happens during Thanksgiving and Christmas???

Just wondering,

Maria

Join your PIR group...if you can't find it let me know. Sorry but no discounts on flights. Have you tried Cheap tickets and other dicsount sites?
You might also consider Amtrak. It's usually cheaper.
I left for boot camp Dec 17th but was put on hold for 2 weeks because of the holiday season. I literally learned how to fold my clothes and my rack over and over again for 2 weeks straight. We didn't get to officially start our training. We didn't get a phone call home either on Christmas. All they let us do was write letters that day.

Also one thing that really helps during boot camp are not only the letters but my grandma from New Zealand used to send me newspaper and magazine clippings of interesting random stuff. it would take my mind off things for at least 10 minutes and smile and what i was reading about an article about a certain animal, or a short story, or comics from the newspaper.
My son is leaving for Basic on Dec. 14. Will he also be put "on hold"? Does this mean his graduation will be delayed about 2 weeks? I know I won't know a graduation date until much later, but I just wanted to get a general idea. Also, if you are on hold, do you still exercise and work out? Thanks.
He will find out once he gets to bootcamp. Things change all the time.
yes, he will most likely be put on hold. The hold period is called P-days. During P-days, he will work-out, memorize his 11 General Orders, Sailor's Creed, learn how to fold his shirts, underwear, coveralls, and uniform. He will also stencil all his clothes with his last name and last 4 numbers of his social security number. Also he will make and strip his rack about a million times. During this time, they will also be asked if they want to set up an account with Navy Federal, or Armed Forces, or have their pay transferred to their home bank. They will also be asked if they want to start a MyPay account, or start the G.I. Bill. P-days are probably the worse days of boot camp. The first day he arrives, they won't let him sleep. They'll make him walk around a room until he can pee for his first urinalysis. He'll literally sit at a desk all night, waiting for everyone else. I suggest that he doesn't bring anything because they make you put it in a box at the airport and he won't see it again. The clothes that he'll already be wearing, he'll have to take them off and put on NWU's once he arrives. He can choose to throw away his clothes or send them back home. The money for that will be taken out of his first paycheck.
Graduation is never a really sure date till maybe a month out. They send invitations letting you know when it is. To come to the Graduation, make sure you bring that invitation.
I didn't have a graduation because I broke my foot. I had to stay at boot camp for an extra month doing physical therapy. So I was there for 3 instead of 2.
Your son will be fine though. It's definitely a maturing experience.
Thanks so much for the info. It will be really helpful for him to know what to expect. It helps me too.

Hello, can anyone tell me if the Recruiters are allowed to get a Scratch Off Ticket (Lottery game) in a letter while at Boot Camp?? I just thought that would be kind of a fun thing for him to receive...and if he 'won'...an excuse to write home to send it home for cashing in :) !! Just trying to think of things to send...to pass the time!

Thank you

Proud Mom
Pretty sure that's against the regs, I'll look it up to be sure.
Yep, it would be "gambling paraphernalia" and thus prohibited.

Don't worry, he'll have plenty to do to "pass the time." If not, his RDC will see to it he has something to do.
Thanks Anti M! Yeah, that is what I figured!! Oh, I know he will be kept plenty busy...just wanted to send something "fun" from home to take his mind off of 'things' when he has a minute...his 19th Birthday is the 26th of November and I pretty much have been told "Don't even send a Birthday "CARD" from his recruiter!! I guess I will stick with News Clippings of his favorite sport teams :)!

Thanks for all the support...I love this site!
