My son is planning to come home around Christmas time. However, his C School is due to be finished around December 20th, but he doesn't want to make any assumptions as to when he will be free to leave.

Is there a trick to buying airline tickets where he won't get totally gouged by waiting until a week before to plan his trip? Do airlines make some sort of allowances for military personnel?

I havent found one that is too gracious to military regarding costs! I would suggest you buy only a flight to home, some airlines dont charge to change your trip, I believe Jet Blue does it, but you can ask before you book, some only charge 50.00. I have always gotten better deals to book one leg of the trip at a time, then when you are sure of dates, book the return flight, it has worked out well for me. Make sure he has his military ID (duh) and sometimes they will waive the bag fees just by saying your active duty military, some wont unless he has orders with him.

The problem is, he really won't know when he can leave and for how long yet? So I can't even book a part of it, and like you mentioned, if he needs to change later, they will most likely charge him.

American Airlines reimbursed him the difference the first time he was forced to change, but it took some doing to get them to fix it for him. I don't want to go through that again.

I don't know how military friendly Jet Blue is, but I know they charge for just about anything and everything.

And he can't fly Southwest because we are in Dallas and that's a whole other issue.

Sounds more like a issue than I thought. Has he put in a leave chit yet? I am guessing he knows where he is going after C school correct? Did his new command give him a contact or does he already know who to report to? Just asking if he started the process of leave approvals yet?

Actually I have used Jet Blue multiple times and they dont charge for the first bag you check and you can take carry ons. It wont hurt to call Jet Blue or what airlines you want to see what their policy is for changing, and throw in its veterans day (just kidding) but I would ask sometimes its not advertised but when you get a live person on the phone they are very helpful.

Jet Blue doesn't fly San Diego to Dallas.
As far as he knows now, he'll head back to San Diego afterwards.

Unfortunately, especially coming out of school, he's sort of stuck with the higher prices. Now, he could ask his command when they suggest he make his tickets for, and they can help him with that.

One good thing though - if he flies Delta (others may do this, too, but I know Delta does - we've done it personally) - but if he shows them his ID and his orders (showing he's on leave or that he's transferring - they do it with both) - they will waive the baggage fees. Traveling with his seabag and stuff, this can save him several hundred dollars. He won't be able to do it at the automated check in machine though - he needs to talk to one of the ticket agents at the counter.

Once he's at a perm. duty station, he will be able to have a bit more advance notice with his leave stuff usually. (Though, of course, leave can get cancelled last minute due to needs of the Navy, no matter what command.) But, at least for this, the no baggage fees can save him some money.
