My fiancé are getting married this Friday. The following Monday he will be signing with the navy. I have already asked the recruiter quite a few questions already (not to mention googled every little question that had came to mind) I was just wondering what are some important questions to ask??? We also have a baby together :)

He is just beginning?  Here is one situation to keep in mind.  He is allowed to have two dependents.  That's you, and the baby.  He would need a waiver for three dependents.  The recruiter may stress the point that if you should get pregnant during the process, it could potentially delay his ship date should you deliver before he actually goes to boot camp. He'd need to wait for the waiver, and could lose his selected rating.

Other than that, you probably have found what you need to know this early on.  And do not rely on everything you find online, old information hangs around on the internet forever.  Tha, and what applies to other branches may not be the way the Navy does it.

Please, ask away!

It's just me and the baby. When would he be able to have a third dependent?

Anytime after he finishes boot camp.  It is just when he joins that there is a limit which requires a waiver.

My fiance and I are in a similar situation as you. We are getting married in December, however he has already signed and ships in March. We've had tons of questions about how everything works, so I'll follow your thread to see what else comes up.

Congrats, btw! :)

Thanks. Congratulations to you too! In march he starts training?

He goes to boot camp at the end of March and then to San Antonio for HM A-school after that. We're expecting the end of May to early June for A-school. Do you know what rating your husband-to-be is interested in?

When did your fiancé take the asvab? And when did he find out where is His A-school will be. I know this week he is going in so they can do a background check on him. But we won't really know anything til Monday when he signs. I do know he mentioned wanting to be a police officer, or something to do with missiles.

Well, he'd been working with a recruiter for a few months. Then he went to MEPS at the end of August and took the asvab one day and stayed overnight and did medical and met with the person who assigns jobs the next day. So when they're assigned their rating at MEPS, that's when they swear into reserves and get their ship date. From what I understand, when they leave for boot camp, the swear in again at MEPS and then are offically active duty.

Is your fiance going to MEPS to take the asvab on Monday? Cause when he goes to MEPS, that's when he officially signs his contract, gets his rating and A-school, and gets his ship date.

His A-school will be based on what he picks for a rating. If he's interested in law enforcement, he should try to get a Master at Arms (MA) rating. That was the other one my fiance was interested in. That A-school is also in San Antonio, but I believe its a bit shorter than HM schooling.

If you're getting married on Friday, it might be best to wait until you have your marriage certificate in hand before he signs his contract, that way you'll be listed as a dependent from the very beginning. My fiance's recruiter said that after we're married, I'll have to bring in my identification and our marriage certificate and they'll have to change all his paperwork so that I can be added. If you can avoid that and just be his spouse from the start, it may be easier. That's definitely a question you can ask!

Monday from what I understand is just going into the recruiters office with our marriage license, so that way the baby and I are covered. The recruiter hasn't been very clear on what the next few steps are. I guess we'll see..

Well, the way it went for us was that my fiance had to fill out like twenty pages of stuff which they put into their system to do a background check and things. Then they scheduled him for his two days a MEPS where he did the asvab and job choosing. Then after that, whatever time between MEPS and ship date is spent in DEP (delayed entry program) and he has to meet twice a month at the recruiting station and text the recruiter once a week until he ships out. That's pretty much it :)

Thanks, you have been very helpful!
