The various ships....

Is there a webpage somewhere that shows all the different classes of ships with a listing of their sizes?

I've been looking all over and while I can find sites that discuss the different classes, I can find nothing that compares them by length and tonnage. Trying to envision the various ships and which class my son may be assigned to. TIA.

Yeah, he said class ranking doesn't count any more. It's all based on needs of the Navy.

Does class ranking count when it comes time to pick orders that are available? Such as he is 1st in his class does he get to pick first?  that is how some class do it.

Not sure how that will work. He says he does get to put in for his dream sheet, but that it's not really considered. I guess I can understand it. Otherwise, you've got all the top people in places like Hawaii, and the bottom of the class manning up some place like Somalia.

But it would seem to take away a bit of the motivation. I wonder how much class rankings influence promotions?

They do not.  Once you're out of A school, those standings have no bearing on anything.  A sailor might get a day of special liberty for outstanding performance, but nothing which would count for points toward advancement.  Not unless there is a new policy, and I've not heard of it.  With all the bragging rights here, someone would have said something.  

How it worked when they did get to pick orders: I was top of my class and I did get my choice of orders... but it wasn't from "anything in the Navy", it was a pool/list of available billets lined up as closely as possible to the class dream sheets. These billets were what were going to be assigned anyway, choosing was a reward, but pretty much an illusion.  My dream country was on there, but the C school wasn't good, so I took orders to a communications systems instead.  Still ended up where I wanted to be later, just with a better NEC and a better command.  

I got another long school when I re-enlisted.  After that school, I had a dream sheet in, but they needed a hot body in Diego Garcia, I fit the billet, so that's where I went.  After DG, I did get my top choice.  After that?  Nothing I wanted, nothing near my husband, so I chose to separate rather than re-enlist.

Hmmmmm, I thought they made an effort to keep spouses together. Funny, I know an ex-Brigadier General and Sgt. in the Army and they ALWAYS seemed to get transferred together. Funny how that works.

Spouse co-location is not that easy to get.  We already had orders when we married, so we spent two years apart.  Then he got orders near me, but I was up for new orders.  The biggest problem is we were both the same rate, paygrade, and nearly the same NECs (MOS for Army).  Once you advance to ET1, there are fewer billets to choose from.  We were competing with each other.

Also, "first term" sailors are not eligible for co-location.  Oh yes, the Navy tries, but it will not create billets to keep spouses together.  The job always comes first.

you can go on google and look up whatever ship you want. just go to us navy ships. my grandson is on the uss george washinton and i found out alot about it there:0
