My son leaves end of June for bootcamp, what should be doing to help him financially.  He is going to put me on his bank account so I can have access to that, but is there anything else??

Does he have a cell phone, insurance, car payment, credit cards, ect.  Anything he is paying for himself?  It might be good to have access to those accounts just in case they are not directly withdrawn to ensure a payment isn't missed.  I'm not sure if you can get a power of attorney for the time he's in BC.  I know that the way deployments are handled just so you can do anything for him if something comes up.

Our son left earlier this week.  Last week, we went to a lawyer and did a simple will, power of attorney and POA for medical.  The medical only kicks in if he cannot speak for himself.  The regular POA will allow us to do his taxes, pay bills, etc., on his behalf.  I was already on his bank acct...but this gives us additional authority if something comes up like being overseas at tax time.

When does your son leave?  Check out the DEP Leavin in June Group!

We'd love to add you to our calendar (in the discussion forums on that site).

I did join. Thank you. My son leaves June 27.
We've added you to the calendar so you can see others leaving at the same time.

When my daughter left for bc on 1/2/11 (grad 3/4/11), she didnt' take her ATM card, but within a week or two of BC, she wrote and said she needed it. I sent it and it took about 1.5 weeks to get to her. So I suggest taking it right away.  My name is on her accounts, so that I could pay her bills and transfrer money when needed.  She also signed several checks to pay her bills (but I eventually set everything up online).  Not a financial thing, but a calling card is good (although it can be purchased at the Nex). It doesn't have to have tons of min on it. When she got to the A school for corpma at GL, she was able to use her cell phone. She hasn't used the calling card since, but keeps for emergency.
