Hello,  I'm hoping I can get some information here.  My 18 year old daughter is dating a Navy Seabee stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.  She's only dated him in person 4 weeks total since December, the rest of the time has been on Skype.  Anyway, they have set a wedding date for this December.  My main concerns are these:  He told her there was no chance of him getting deployed, he also said that all he has to do is "sit back and relax four more years in OK"  She's going with the understanding of being in Oklahoma for 4 years with no worries of him getting deployed or being stationed elsewhere.  He also said he gets a significant raise after they get married and she will not have to work, everything can be taken care of.  (he will get a housing allowance to cover that expense, also he will get money to give to her to give to college) I don't know anything about him or the Navy, but this just doesn't seem right.

He's supposed to be taking a test in November to become a Petty Officer so he said he will get another raise after this.

Can anyone give me some information?  I'm just worried about my daughter.  Thank you so much.

My husband is a Chief stationed at Tinker and here is what I can tell you:

  • Without giving away OPSEC type information, what the young man said is true. The seabees here do not deploy except for training type missions.  These could be a day or 30 days but they do not leave the US
  • Once married, he will get BAH (basic allowance housing).  This is 990 a month for E4 and below.  He would also receive BAS (basic allowance subsistence) if he is not already receiving it.  This is $357.55.  This is funds to feed the Sailor not his/her family.
  • Not a lot of truth to the education comment.  You can google MYCAA.  Those would be the only funds she could qualify for.  A little further in his career he could give her part of his Post 9/11 GI Bill however there are stipulations regarding obligating service
  • I don't know about not working.  An E3/E4 doesn't make a lot of money.  You can google US Military pay charts to know what the exact amount is. It would be tight but its been done.
  • Yes, if he makes E4 he will get a pay raise however it will not be instantaneously.  He could be frocked but not paid for the new rank for six months.

I hope this helps.
